I could go into all kinds of scenarios/situations on this issue. My Dad was a township trustee for several years & dealt with several fence disputes. Since I am a glutton for punishment I recently accepted a trustee position in the township I live in.

In Iowa unless it is recorded differently in the “Fence Books” at the County Recorders office, as you stand on your property; the right hand half is yours/your responsibility.

Is it possible the fella just hasn’t gotten to this stretch of fence ?

I would try to contact him directly, better to make contact, ask a few questions & try to get things worked out amicably. Fence disputes can get all kinds of crazy.

No reason for you to get railroaded into taking care of someone else’s fence. 50’ isn’t much but what happens if the other landowner sees this as an opportunity to expect you to maintain their other fence obligations.

@Hedgerow will probably have good input since he runs cattle in your state.

I found out that the iowa fence law don’t mean chit as I was involved in a lawsuit with the a-hole neighbor of mine

It’s usually a 50/50.
Neighbors around here usually do whatever works.

If one don’t have the cash to replace his half, sometimes the other will make a deal where the other buys the supplies and the one supplies the labor,
On another note, it is not uncommon for a fella with cattle has to write a check for the damage caused by his cows getting out into someone’s corn field.

If the folks around here don’t like the way the trustees rule, they go to district court & if memory serves correctly one fella took it to the Iowa Supreme Court & ended up winning. His neighbor had to remove the five barb fence he built & put in one barb low, woven wire in the middle & a barb over the top. Those guys have been neighbors for over 50 years. Something about the way the law was written way back when & it hadn’t been changed in the books.

The last bunch of 70 he is running two horned Hereford bulls in his mix of bulls but dehorning his calves when working them. I just laughed & asked him if he thought it was a little counter productive, maybe Polled Hereford would be a better choice next go round.

Damn hard to find a decent performing Polled Hereford bull these days..

If ya do find one, he’s gonna be spendy..

Most of the pulled Hereford‘s around this part of the country are essentially registered Coon *s-word..
Only kept as a bull because they were polled Hereford.

There are a few Polled Hereford sellers around here, I have heard no complaints from folks that have used them. My Dad & brother seem to get along well with theirs. The Angus bulls are always fighting & the Herefords are usually staying busy.

I'd love to get my hands on a few herefords to feed out and finish, just to compare the carcass traits, feed conversion, and yield to the angus, shorthorn, and crossbred steers I've already run through the feedlot.

I just got off the horn with the MFA oil lab in Moberly. I had some questions about their bar oil.

1.) Shelf life ? Fella said after about 5 years the tackifier may start to separate but a good shake of the jug or stir of the barrel would take care of that.
The reason I inquired is, I read on one of the spec sheets for another bar oil ( I can’t recall the brand ) the shelf life was 2-3 years.

2.) Whether it was virgin oil or filtered used oil with tackifier added ? He said that theirs is always virgin oil. They occasionally use older hydraulic oil & use oil from damaged containers then add the appropriate tackifiers to get their blend correct.

The fella also told me that they could blend up smaller batches thicker or thinner per customer preference.

He then said they could deliver in bulk with the tank wagon using 275 gallon or 330 gallon totes. I told him that wasn’t really in the cards for me.
