I wonder how much difference you'd see on a hot 346 between 3/8lp, .325 and 3/8" chains in regards to cutting speed, loading and smoothness?

FWIW on CL there's a 3120 and 2100 not too far away. I'd love the 3120, but not right now. The 2100, we'll see about.

I've mowed down a tree or two before
They dont make the best backstops.
I learned the hard way years ago that power poles (wooden) don't make good ones either... There's one N.W. of Eureka KS which will eventually go down, (likely) due to being ventilated by a .243...

I was using the 450 for bigger stuff.
14" or 15" that's why I wanted .325 :)
Matt knows best..... but with a hot
346 I think 3/8 would be fastest.
You can make 3/8 smooth with good angles and higher rakers.
All my new lgx oreogon on this roll
Is really agressive and I had the narrow kerf bar and chains so I figured I would use them. I don't have too much experience with .325 other than regular sharpening I'm gonna learn a little
I guess :)

On my old 346, we only ran .325 as that's how it came and I never changed it. I am impressed at how Dad's MMWS 346 pulls a 20" bar of 3/8" but will end up buying a 16 bar for balance and crank loading... I do think that the .325 chain cut more smoothly. I've been pretty impressed with the 3/8lp chains on the 201T though and can't help wondering if that would effectively waste less power in the kerf than the other two. I'm just not sure how the smaller teeth would stand up to the chain speed and torque of the 346...

.325 cutters are closer together, therefore smoother. They can be plenty fast for work saws.
Just not win races against proper 3/8" race chain.

When I ordered 3/8 low pro
It was rated for 2.5 hp or so.
People do all kinds of stuff with it
But I have seen them break.
NK. 325 might be a sweet spot
But it only comes in semi chisel.
NK is a total of .060 narrower
Than standard .325

If a saw came stock with 325, I think the factory put it there because it was designed to run that type of chain. But it could also be a cost factor, too. Being less expensive and increasing profits. Ive seen several makes and models that came with 325 and been switched to 3/8 and apparently not suffered. But I have to think that the designers put 325 on them to let them run a higher rpm in the cut, hence cut faster. With that being said I'll be the first to say I'm no expert on chains. Actually, I'm not much of an expert on anything. Really more of a spert than anything else.

I would like to run .325 on the MS261 along with the 346 and the 550, but the only bars w/the same driver count in 16" are .050-3/8". The 261 and 346 do fine with them, we'll see about the 550. There ends up being a 1 or two link difference in the count in .325 bars. I would also like to get some Total or Sugi bars for them, but the only way to do 3/8" is to buy a .325 bar and then buy the replaceable 3/8 nse sprocket and perform surgery on brand new bars (SMH). We'll see. Would a 1 driver difference be that noticeable swapping saw to saw after the initial stretching?
