I don't have much experience with finishing big slabs in a live edge condition.....Matt has done more of that than I.
I have worked with big slabs cutting em down into smaller pieces..... and yeah, expect movement......sometimes lots of it, it all depends on the species, tree, and individual board.......and some on the way it's been processed.

I tell people, wood is not uniform...... if you want a uniform stable media, work with metal or plastic. 🙂
Ha! Definitely all of the above. Seen normal movement in ash, red oak and black walnut, but that sycamore looked like it had grain running in every direction...crazy

I'm a lot sorer than I expected to be now. Gonna do some machine work today. I'll report back this evening.
Started to ask about the new prison purse but this is not the NSP thread. Older we get the longer it seems to heal, part of life I suppose.

They decided they had enough people at work today so asked if I wanted the day off. Semi-straightened the bunk feeders and put them out for the cows now. Self tappers and fender washers should keep the liner in place. Boys got a concrete one so lets see how long it will take them to tear it up. Ran a couple quick errands an met dad at grandparents house to do some more cleaning up. Grandmothers wood cook stove will come to live in my shop at some point before too long when I get some other stuff cleaned up. Looks like I need a globe for a coleman 242 as well.

I saw that I can pickup a replacement from Coleman for $22 +$6 shipping that fits several models. Or Amazon knock-off for $23 shipped with extra mantels. Don't think I'm too worried about finding one that says pyrex right now. Single number on bottom for date stamp but no letter so I'm not sure if it's a 6 or a 9. Either way they were made from 44-50 so still a bit older that me.

I’ve got about a case of replacement globes for 202 A’s if you’d like to have one. I collect Coleman lanterns as a hobby. I’ve got the full line of 242’s both green and chrome font. Several 202’s but I do not have a ‘53 Christmas lantern. I also like the 228 “Big Hat” lantern. I have that full line up too.

Not surprising. Have you ever split sycamore? It is like trying to split cable...

Thanks for the offer, I will remember when I get around to doing something with it. Too many projects to start it now. I remember that you collect them and figured you would know about the parts. May have to put you on the boat and send you home with some crappie before too long. Been a year or so since I took Matt and longer that that for Derek and Sam.

Morning Midlanders! Fell almost a week behind on here again.

My ‘nephew’ Allen has been helping me with the Deere 81. Allen was 5 when I came to Joetown.

Got it apart again. Cross your fingers Matt. 😑

And He and I figure the China ‘066’ needs a timing retard. That project is 2 1/2 years old. 💩

Absolutely, power company dropped a 54" sycamore for the new service when we built our house, tried hand splitting for about a third of it then went hydro. I don't think I got more than a handful of true splits, more like chunks. I only F with them now when they fall in pastures, otherwise let 'em rot!

Beautiful stuff! Have you worked with this before with success? I chainsaw milled some 30" wide into 8/4 slabs and let them air dry a couple of years. Went to rip into 10" wide boards with skillsaw and it still had so much internal stress it would bind the saw and the boards twisted a solid 2", even though it was dry as a bone. This was about 4 years ago and I've not tried anymore, even though they're very plentiful here.
Just wondering if I had a wilder than normal one!
Slabs will almost always have stress.
The most stable boards will be the ones with vertical grain”quarter dawn”
Slabs run the gamut of the log and usually have to be “leveled” and sealed up good after dry.
