We always had White Rock layers when I was growing up.

And 1 rooster with them.

That’s how Dad would run them.

I don’t know if there is any science behind it but he said the eggs were better when you had 1 rooster in the flock?

Ours were free range put up at night.

Nearest neighbor to us was 1/2 mile away.

Driving all the way to Lebanon seems like a long way to get chickens..

Are the chickens better up there?
Yes, and yes, Cackle has good stock.

And, the post office is charging $20 for poultry shipping now.....plus I have gotten bird orders where all of em were dead on delivery due to the cold, so I opted to pick up this batch.

It’s morning, this waking up @ 3:00am & not being able to back to sleep is BS.

At least there was coffee to be brewed & oatmeal in the cupboard.
36° now, rain at 10-11 again @1 til 2 a.m. perhaps don't believe the temp guess while they guess rain. Oatmeal and perking coffee soon
G'day gents

Yup.
Barred rock, white rock, orpington, Wyandotte, brown leghorn, & austrlorp....allegedly.......as long as they're hens it's all good...now, if there's more than one rooster, something's gonna die.
our experience with the barred rock wasn't that great. excellent egg production but only when i could keep them from eating the other birds or themselves. they were very aggressive.

Yeah, I'm not a real fan of barred rocks either, but this was the first hatch and I kinda just took what I could get.....the Wyandotte and australorp are the real ornery characters.
But, at the end of the day..... any individuals who don't get along with the flock will be shot....

In our experience, chickens become jerks when they're stressed....hot, cold, hungry, thirsty, etc, and definitely when overcrowded, or not getting enough protein in their feed they'll start eating chicken.

Most layer feed is 16% protein. I kinda think that's the bare minimum manufacturers can get by with, I like to feed the 20% stuff, or supplement with "dogfood" meat from the pigs.

The last batch the kids got were some giant black birds..
Half were roosters.. they got whacked and froze.

Maybe jersey giants?....... those are some very easy going birds.

We raised 100 layer breed roosters one year for meat......pretty much a flop as far as meat production, but it was (very) entertaining to watch 100 juvenile roosters try to sort out the pecking order.
