The mill, chains, bar, helper handle, oiler kit & rails, are probably over $500 new. I see they mention a precision grinder also. Plus the saw. I would say that is smokin deal.

I've had way better luck smoking a roast than a brisket. Cheaper too.

I think that 500 vl is one that you could still get a new saw from Eco from since it had the exploding flywheel if I remember correctly.

It depends on the serial number; but, yes, you can still get a free saw if you have one of the old ones:

Consumers should discontinue using the Echo 500 VL chain saw immediately. Owners of Model 500VL chain saws with serial numbers inclusive to 0023000 should contact their Echo Dealer to arrange for replacement of the saw at no charge.

Thanks for the wood offers. Found some closer to home. Smoked about 30lbs of boston butt for pulled pork on Sunday. Holds a temp nice, think we'll get along just fine.

325 on the firebox end, 225 up high by the stack. Could go 2 hrs on just a couple sticks, but didn't vary much. Enough steel to really hold the heat. Likely have to damp it down some with better wood, this was starting to punk on the smaller pieces.
