As long as we're back on carbs, I did take a minute last night to take pics of the HS that came out of the SXL 925. First pic shows the brass H insert as well as another orifice in the well for the H circuit. Wondering why there is no hole in the well for the L jet?
Second shows the brass governor. After the pic I was able to get it out (and also smooth file my previous slot damage). Is the ball in this thing supposed to move freely when it's out of the carb body? This one does not currently move freely. I think Al said it opened at a certain resonance, does that mean there is a spring in there as well?

Well, after taking a break from the SXL 925 to work on an 018 and 041 for the farmers I finally got this one back on the bench. I cut 2 discs from an old metering diaphragm and placed them under the governor plug. It would fire with a prime but not run. I noticed that someone had used a formed fuel line between the tank and the metal pipe, but then had jerry-rigged a piece of larger diameter tygon between the pipe and the carb, and it was sucking air more than fuel. I had a formed pipe-to-carb line on hand, but the inlet elbow on the carb was too big for the formed fuel line. Pondered that for a while, then remembered an old XL auto carcass I had with a blue coil of death. It happened to have an SDC carb on it, so just for *s-wordes and giggles, interchanged the fuel elbows and she's a runner! I hope to try it in some wood this weekend.

Question...when I got this saw it has a 20" thin Oregon bar that looks a little goofy on a vintage saw. While it'll do for now, would you know a source other than fleabay for a more fitting 24" or 28" thicker bar? Roller would be great, but hardnose or sprocket works as well. I scanned the for sale area but didn't go back more than couple of months worth of postings.

Just to confirm, you are looking for 3/8" .050 or 3/8" .058 for the bar? I ran into this with two of my McCullochs that were .404. I assumed .063 until I measured it and it was .058.

I'll confirm tonight, but the PO had sharpied 3/8, 0.05 70 DL on the skinny bar, will check the clutch drum and the PO's chain. Everything I have is 0.050, but the chain that came with it is one that has the huge shark fin bumpers and looks like it was used to trench in a waterline, so a new chain is in order anyway if a different gauge bar is available

I forgot to add, either the forums here or eBay are probably going to be your best bet to find a more appropriate bar for your saw. I was able to pick up a McCulloch 24" bar .404/.058 locally for $40, little bit of rust on it, but not bad for over 60 years old. It will polish up fine and I will repaint the black stripe on the nose.

Any of you guys have serial number ID on 650 homelites? I'm trying to figure out if mine is a regular or super. I know super has 5 av mounts but I don't know where

It appears you probably have the standard (not super) 650. I am getting this information from sales records kept by Joyce Wilson (she and her husband owned a chainsaw shop). They kept records of every Homelite they sold by date, serial number and saw type. From a quick look, here is what I found:

16101273 - 02/76 - 650
16102119 - 02/76 - 650
16102120 - 05/76 - 650
16102116 - 07/76 - 650
16102122 - 08/76 - 650
16101273 - 10/76 - 650

46101345 - 09/76 - S-650
46101346 - 09/76 - S-650

It appears that they were two totally different serial number strings, but you can estimate your saw was most likely produced in 1975 from this. Here it the link where I got my info:

Checked, and the setup is 3/8, 0.050, and the bar is an Oregon 2006DDD096NK. While I'll keep an eye out for other options I'll probably just run this one a while to see what happens.
I saw (no pun intended) a few on ebay that actually weren't terribly priced, but another $30 or $40 in shipping kinda stings!

Yes, it does, the one I found was from eBay, the guy is local so we worked out a meetup to cut out the shipping. That did help, saved me $20. He has a C-91 that would be a good deal without the shipping, thinking about it real hard

stumbled across another old homie, the local hardware store had it in the back for a couple decades, fires off on a prime, wont run though, its got something up with the disc the starter rope wraps around, I think the hole is broken in it where you knot the end of the rope.

I seen that. And yes they are desirable. I already have one from @Stump Shot . I'm thinking about restoring it this summer as it's very rough.
