I did a compression test on it. Looking through the spark plug hole you can see a vertical score in there. Looks bad. Just want to make sure I can get the parts to fix it before I take it apart. Thank you for the reply

I know about the 6119 seal for the homelite XL-12 saws , what about the automatic oiler side?

From 'the list'. Generally accepted as correct for the XL-12's/SXL's. OEM is still available, but you'll usually pay dearly for a 58308/07021, though a quick check shows a reasonable one on ebay right now. Aftermarket alternatives seem either non-existent or 'close, but no cigar' regarding acceptable dimensions.

XL-12/SXL Series:

-F/W Seal:12282A (OLD # 58688A). SKF 6119 double lip. SKF 6120 single lip. National
253747. Poulan530019097.

-PTO Side Seal for saws with the auto oiler drivecase with the fill up by the
handlebar bracket: 58308B / 07021. Aftermarket?

-PTO Side Seal for saws with the manual oiler drivecase and the oil fill down below
the muffler: 12282A. SKF 6119 double lip. SKF 6120 single lip. National 253747.
Poulan 530019097.

I've only done a couple of those particular saws and had access to 58308's at the time. The 07021's are fundamentally the same OEM seal, just with the latest part number -- 58308, 58308A, 58308B, UP07021. I've been told by an authoritative source that they're is no (or very little) difference among them. They were used on several saws and I'm surprised Sawzilla hasn't found someone to do repops as a Proline alternative. They'd sell a $hit ton of em.

As I've said many a time with enough research you can find alternative seals for just about any thing ever made .Keep in mind I've found the elusive clutch side seal for the 042 and 048 Stihls but must admit it was a challenge to do so . If it were easy anybody could do it with or without the OEM part number .

Didn't you send me a link to those?

And do ya think ya could rustle us up a source for these Homelite seals? I seem to recall reference to a Dichtomatik solution, but no actual cigar when it came right down to it.

Back when i restored a few 2100's and 3100's i needed some of the 58308 seals and i tried
several bearing and seal houses with no luck. Nothing online either. Had to wait to find
oem Homelite seals to get the saws done.

The only way I found those Stihl seals was by the size listed in the Stihl IPL .You might try that for those hard to find seals ,The only way I was able to cross reference to the two Partner P-100's was after I got the IPL for a Mac 1000 and use McCulloch numbers crossed to Bearings Inc .Then use those numbers on flea bay .The Bearings Inc book lists all the dimensions, lip code ,temperature rating ,material used and that stuff .After all that it easy .

I took a look see on that Homelite seal .If I'm correct it's CR #6120 .625 shaft ,.879 OD .188 width , lip code R .If that's correct depending it could be any where from 5 bucks to 30 . I'll see what flea bay says .

6120 and 6119 are the single and double lip versions for the F/W side and are commonly available. They're also used on the PTO side of saws with the manual oiler drive case as mentioned above. It's the auto oiler drive case saws that use the proprietary PTO seal.

Going through a pile of parts I picked up recently and found a hen's tooth. A NOS sprocket for an XL-15 gear drive

I've looked long and hard for an alternate for the 58308 and the 12306 seals.

Like a bunch of Homelite bearings, they were only made for Homelite.

Some guys are using available seals for the 58308 that are made for a shaft size of 0.625"

The shaft size on those requiring that 58308 seal is 0.653" which makes their sub very tight.

This thread went a little quiet. I'm hoping some of you homelite gurus can help with this. I've got a super xl-922 that threw a ring and I'm looking at getting some new rings for it as the piston is still good(amazingly). This one has the 2.063" bore and the piston has the 1/16" thick rings. The xl922 ipl I have only shows the part number for the 2" bore and the xl925 used the thin rings. I think the right rings I need use part number 55537 which I know were used by the xl903, 923 & 924. Anyone have any good insight?

Give Hastings Rings a call. They can make any piston ring you need and very reasonable.

I actually have about half dozen tool steel rings partly finished when I made the iron cylinder liner for a Mac 125 years ago .They just need to be ran through a surface grinder and split .As it turned out Mike Acres had a set in stock .Find a British motorcycle forum .Those guys take great pains in DIY type things .Stuff you won't find on CS forums I might add . All that said it's much easier to just buy a set than make them .

I have a brain storm that could work on these bastard size seals .If you found the correct ID size and lip code but the OD was under you might be able to turn an insert made of steel and use the freeze /heat method to seat it .However it would take a darned good lathe and a sharp eye to do .I think I could do if the Monarch 10EE were up and running which alas it's not at the moment .

This is an option for sure, we do it. Also, we have a vendor that will custom make seals.
