Has Maco pistons and cylinders gotten any better through the years?

Chamfers can mess up what one sees.

Caber rings have beveled edges as well. A few times that I needed a 1.5mm, I viewed the replacement Caber next to the oem ring I was using to time the jug. I would’ve sworn it was too thin, but it was just chamfered/tapered/beveled at the business end.

Cabers have grooves around them and also are beveled. I wonder if it’s a superior design to OEM in some cases. Less drag for the same size ring with the same sealing.
I would definitely agree with you less drag you can get out of a set of rings the better in a lot of cases and you would think on a saw that should help on cylinder temp not saying a lot but a touch. I got a set of the f cast in a 660 and right out of the box I fell in love with them. Yeah I know that sounded weird.lol. :beer-toast1:

Idk if it’s me but caber rings seem to give more “felt” compression than oem or am rings. Maybe stiffer? I like em so far is all I know lol.

And just to keep you all updated on what I did today I got the squish where I wanted it to be got it down to .020 yea it took a grand total of four hours doing it the hard way but it's worth it didn't have time to get timing numbers I wanted to get the squish where I wanted it yesterday I did port work to the transfers and now tomorrow I'll get the intake and exhaust finished up and get those were I feel is good enough for the owner of the saw. He's going to be happy.

Exhaust, 101. Transfers, 123. Squish .020. Good enough for who it's for I know I would run it. Lol.:D

Mako was just another labelling for the typical Chinese cylinders, there are a billion different "brands" all selling the same cheap stuff which might not be bad but most brands are just an excuse to confuse buyers as to what they are really getting.

Mako started out as a private label/brand for Tilton Equipment. We saw a fair amount of them and it's just like Dave says, they used several different sources and you never knew what you were getting until you opened the box. Their 52mm 372 kits were pretty good. Other kits were junk. Whoever bought up the Tilton inventory is spreading them out now. Rotary has bought some of them, so beware if ordering any kits from them. They sent me a 48mm sample and it was the lame Huztl open port jug. They just took the Mako box and stuck another label on it.

If performance is the goal, I agree with Doc that there's an awful lot of work involved to get to where you want to be with most of this AM stuff. If it's just a matter of turning a dead saw into a live saw for little cost, then they are fine.

The cylinder that was sent to me wasn't bad I've seen wears I did port it and took the base down to get the squish down from .030 to .020 port timing is right where I feel comfortable to let someone like my friend run he's going to be happy just need to wait for the caber rings to get here one things for sure I'll be upset it his has more power than mine. Lol. No just kidding I know that will be fine or will it?o_O

Got the rings installed and ran the saw just for worm up pretty snappy did a compression check it's right at 175psi so she should be around 180 185psi after they seat I got a feeling it will be a darn good saw for my buddy.

So I sent the saw him with my buddy a couple days ago he ran the saw and brought it back like I told him to so I could check things out for him he told me he only ran a full tank through it which I could tell didn't take much to clean it up so I did another compression test on it now I'm really surprised on how much compression it gained but when I did the first compression test I only ran it just for a little bit so here's where it's at now and I'm hoping it doesn't get any higher. :eek:IMG_20190812_093322.jpg IMG_20190812_093336.jpg

That’s the sweet spot for those saws. Even 200-210 will be ok.

I’m not sure if the plated chamber transfers heat less than an unplated one. I do believe that the factory goes through the trouble of leaving chambers bare aluminum for a reason.

Yeah it seems to like where it's at that's for sure in fact I think this saw douse have a little more power than mine. Lol I won't be telling him that though. Lol. I agree with you on the platting and most of the time I end up getting rid of it to get the exhaust down where it needs to be like all of us do but didn't need to on this cylinder but I still had to take the base down quite a bit though but I'm very happy how it turned out very strong saw.
