Smart guys never have to split wood at cold temps. All done ahead of time.
20s with single digit wind chills. Lol
I'm usually inside being warmed by the fire, not outside splitting.
I'll do the splitting during decent respectable temps. Above freezing.

single digits ain’t bad if the sun is shining and no wind.
Yes. I prepare and do ALL of my work ahead of time! Try and work smarter, not harder. Just me.then it’s not really frozen wood jeffus. It was single digits here today and when out of the wind and in the sun it was actually decent but I know you would have been inside by the fire.

Stringy wood is still stringy whether it’s wet or dry.Splitting by hand I'd prefer doing it dry, but it takes a while for a whole round to dry, though stacking them in a row facing the sun speeds it up a lot. Green has too much tendency to get stringy.
I walked out to my wood boiler this morning and thought hey it don't feel too bad out! You know it's been cold when -15 feels not bad, mother nature doesn't want to spoil me though she's got some more -25 to -30 stuff starting again tomorrow.View attachment 281989

Yup. Although sometimes frozen solid helps...Stringy wood is still stringy whether it’s wet or dry.
Gum or elm... I just let it rot to re-enrich the soil. Ain’t worth my time. I’ve got better fishes to fry. ymmv of course.Sometimes I just use a 50cc splitter especially on s*** like this .
You would go cold in my country mate it's all we have got only softwood here as pine Sheoak and rubbish like that not worth burningGum or elm... I just let it rot to re-enrich the soil. Ain’t worth my time. I’ve got better fishes to fry. ymmv of course.
Did you end up deciding on a wood boiler? When you’ve got a hungry OWB and it’s -15, you don’t fuss about wood. Just burn it. If it’s stringy then just don’t split it. Lol
