I like this information. Especially the info on different tail patterns with slot sizes and adjuster hole location and all. I’ll share some info on drilling holes in bars or really any hardened steel I’ve learned from knife making. You can drill through hardened steel using a concrete drill like you would use in a hammer drill. They work pretty good for me and can be found in lots of sizes. Some can get pricey though

Would like to find some old Oregon and Windsor bar application guides.

Probably the best deal right now:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Tecomec-Ch...O-Repair-Tool-Pro-Bench-Mounted-/381880301401

*make sure that they include the punches and spinner parts for all of the chains you (might) use

I may have to show this to Santa Claus. My unit has been showing signs of wear.

Say, Philbert, remember that time I asked about curing vibration on my Oregon 511A sharpener that I thought was caused by an out-of-balance grinding wheel? Well, it turns out the wheel was OK. I cleaned up the sharpener and oiled it all around the spring and pivot. To my surprise, the vibration that was driving me bonkers vanished.

p.s. Santa Claus nodded and said. "Ho Ho Ho!" It's on its way.

Some great info posted so far guys thanks. So now I’m wondering if there’s really no way to measure a bar for chain size because of all the differences how do y’all come to a drive link count when say I put a 20” stihl ES 3/8 x 50 bar on a 372xp using an adapter. Is it just trail and error or I’m I missing something here.

Marshall,
In my experience, the ES stud slot will have to be lengthened 1/2-3/4" towards the bar tip. This will allow for proper travel of the adjuster, and keep the DL count at 72.

Ahh ok. I was wondering why guys talked about lengthening the slot. That makes sense. Thanks

I've actually had 20" loop chains for a Stihl 361 stretch so far with the standard small sprocket that the only way I could keep using them tight was either to remove a DL from the chain or go to the next size up sprocket rim. It was easier to change to the the larger rim. This usually occurred after half a dozen sharpenings or more.

Mount the bar on the saw and measure around the bar and saw sprocket with a piece of electrical wire ( like #14 wire). Then check a chain length chart. There are probably better charts, here is one.

That great information too bud. I’d imagine that would get you in the ballpark at least. Thanks

Ray, I just cut a chain loop for a 70-link, 3/8" pitch full chisel and measured it before I connected it up. The length was just under 51.5 inches. I usually count the DL's twice before I cut the chain and make the loop. I still recommend this, but this chart you posted fascinates me.
