Jbweld is what I've used on a dozen mag tanks, the sealer is a little $$ but the can I bought is probably gonna last me my lifetime! Just cut it with acetone. View attachment 478840
I had a good friend that went blind from juvenile diabetes. He went to Omaha to learn all of the ways to cope with the challenges of being blind. He did wood working (Like me) and told me that to keep that expensive tongue oil from drying out to put clean smooth rocks in the can to keep the liquid full to the rim. I asked how you know when the can is full. I have never forgotten "HOW" he said "If yer dumb enough to ask dumb questions don't lick your fingers when you find out, It tastes like ###$.
The reason for the previous comment is "Does Red-Kote evaporate or just get thick. My way of thinking is mebbe if the can is always full (Until it ain't) displacing the air with rocks or something would help. I like the Acetone Idea better.
Sometimes it is a pleasant feeling when old memories pop up.

If you suppose that you can't so something or are afraid of failing, remember, it was broken in the first place before you tried to fix it.
In other words, you will never know what you are capable of repairing if you don't try something. If you do fail, at least you learned what not to do or improve upon the next time around...

Got ugly for a thread on OPE, sounds more like AS...

I too use Red Kote and my last can did at least 10 fuel tanks (mostly 10 Series) and was nearly one year old for the last one. I put a date on the can when I open it and keep track of how many tanks I do. For the last use, the product was indeed getting rather thick. Acetone will definitely cut it, I had an "empty" can that was fully cured and decided to soak some parts in acetone in that can, the Red Kote dissolved and put a nice thin coating on whatever else was soaking in there.

$43 for a quart of Red Kote is a pretty good price too.

For what it's worth, I don't put anything in the can after use, just reseal the lid and hold it upside down for a few seconds to form a good seal around the lid then store it right side up.

If you do a good job of prepping the surface and let the JB Weld cure the tank should not leak, but the Red Kote treatment could forestall any additional corrosion on the inside. Clean the inside of the tank very thoroughly before applying the Red Kote and let it cure fully before adding any fuel. A thick coating could take 7-10 days if you keep it at room temperature. If I put it in the uninsulated attic (summer) or above the wood stove (winter) 2-3 days will be more than enough.

Well, that is a heck of a place to mount a decompression valve!!

I agree, if something is broken, then it's broken, you can't make it any more broken, I have been surprised many times when I said "screw it, lets give it a try" and it worked!!

And always have a good plan "B", a plan "C" and a desperation plan "2-C" ready to go. Sooner or later, you'll succeed if you try hard and long enough.

I often pre buy a replacement of what I'm very likely about to ruin. So far my extra cylinder to ruined cylinder ratio is 2:1.
