How many of you guys use this Fiskars 8lb maul? I really like this one. Also played with the x27....it has surprising splitting power for a much lighter weight. I’ll have to do a comparison video of the two...

I own both. I have a hydraulic available as well. The 27 actually makes splitting straight grained wood enjoyable. I've always hand split a little but now for any ash or red oak I bring home the splitter stays in the garage. The isocore is handy for remote firewooding and stubborn rounds. I don't feel like it is as much of a difference maker as the x27 is.

I have the X27 and the Isocore maul. I used the X27 for years then recently got a hydraulic splitter that runs on my tractor PTO. I still use the X27 a little bit but the hydraulic let's me get ahead. Both are good splitting tools.

I have both. I love the maul for difficult wood. X27 is impressive for easier wood.

My issue with the X27 is that in stubborn springy wood it's more likely to wedge in and get stuck. The maul blasts it to pieces.

Just picked up the Isocore at HD today. I meant to try it out but ran out of daylight. I have some difficult rounds left from the last red oak we brought in that the 27 didn’t like.

Isocore for rounds the splitting axe bounces off. Its come close to hitting me in the head a few or more times. I like my original fiskars splitting axe for the easier to split wood but i rather use the isocore when the wood feels toughened up. Both have excellent power to weight ratio and very noticeably less shock transfer from the handles to the bones.

I have the maul and X27 as well, and while I do use the maul sometimes, I find myself using the X27 more. I can get so much more speed swinging the smaller weight, I don't have an issue getting through Locust, or Cottonwood. Now when it comes to the nasty Elm we have out here, I use the Isocore maul exclusively, because it has the weight to break through that stringy crap.

What size were those rounds, 3 ft? The one in the video looked huge.

That was a 32” bar on the 395. I’m guessing 38” or so. I did use the x27 on one full round. I think, time wise, it took a little longer. The initial time to split the two pieces in half, took a bit longer...hard swings kept getting the head stuck. Lol. I do feel I expended less energy on swinging the x27.

I think the best use would be, quarter with the isocore, then finish off with the x27

Good vid with the Isocore maul. Both it and the X27 def have their purposes in certain wood grains.

I have the same trouble with the head getting stuck with wet, fresh cut wood. On the bigger rounds, I always work my way around the outside with the X27, instead of trying to split it in half. Seems to make it a bit easier IMO.

It's funny you mentioned you feel like you didn't expend as much energy swing the X27, because that's another big reason I quit using the maul so much. When I split wood, I make an afternoon out of it, and I feel a ton better after swinging the X27 for 5 hours vs the Isocore maul for the same amount of time.

They're both great tools for how ridiculously inexpensive they are.
