Hey Studs,
Wife & I did some quick fireworks scrounging. Found some pig nut hickory, locust, hackberry...
Also stumbled upon what I thought was a dead down black locust, but after the wood chips commenced a flying, it appears to be something else.
Any ideas...red elm, red maple?
Doesn't resemble any red oak I've ever cut.

I've seen oak that looks like that. Not red maple. At least around here it'd rot before it ever got like that.

On my FB page...I've gotten red elm, hornbeam, yellow locust, and iron wood thus far.

Did it cut like rocks? The locust I cut that looked like that was a chain killer. Measured 12% in the middle of the trunk.

It cut kinda gnarly...yet not as bad as locust or osage.
The rounds were not huge either...reckon I'll fetch the rest in the morning!!

Update: Split some and here's the results.
Splits pretty easy, smells great & very sweet...my thoughts are Cherry.

Cleaned up the hickories the big oak busted up on it's way down. Got 4 bucket loads like this.

Went out early and got a load of Wattle, which is actually an acacia and an introduced species from Australia. Regarded as one of the best firewood species available in NZ and it just about splits by itself when it sees a Fiskars!

Decided to leave the saws at home today and take the fiskars for a ride. Can see some spots on this tree where the isocore will have to come along. first bucket load out of the woods. Its gona hang out here on the edge of the corn field for atleast a year.

I spent the last couple days bucking, splitting and stacking myself. Mostly hackberry. I also have a fair amount of hedge to do as welll. I have a covered area I usually stack a few cords in then I move outside and stack as well. If I’m busy in the shop during heating season I’ll burn 3-4 cords a year. I get a lot from a friend who does roll off work and lot clearing plus a couple tree guys. I’m not picky about what comes in. The last four, yes four, roll off loads were mostly hackberry with some Osage, a few random Elm and another tree I’m not sure about.
