Finally after working working 7-12's for the best part of three years I'm on an 8 hour shift .I have some time to attend to my firewood So in the last 4-5 days I've split and stacked about 3 cords already cut

I took a cruise through my woods and noted the hickories .For those not familiar a hickory looses it leaves in the fall long before the others .They just turn brown fall off and that's that .I've got three varieties, shag bark, bitternut and shell .They vary as to when they shed .I found one tree,a hundred footer bare which concerns me .If it doesn't leaf in the spring that will tell the tale .
You are a badass my friend, I work a lot of hours myself, but damn you deserve a beer my friend!!!!!!'

It's kind of a long story about the 12 hour days .When my wifes health turned for the worse two things happened .First Alan M. was the ceo of Ford, used to be Boeing .He loved screwing with the labor force .Robert Andrews AKA Rotax Robert told me what was going to happen and it did, forced 12 hour days .Because of possibley huge medical costs I worked every one of them to gang roll money ..She passed ,sadly .

So it seemed a better alternative to work than spend my time in some gin mill .Ya gotta do what ya gotta do some times .So much for that----

Let me put out something maybe some people don't know .Certain hardwoods like white oak can lay on the ground or in rounds for decades and still be solid as a rock .Some like ash hold up well .Others like cherry ,maple, hickory or red oak don't last long .After a few years if not split and stacked up off ground contact will be growing mushrooms and be punky right to the core like a sponge .Recently from a three cord pile of red oak I had to throw out two and that sucks .Total waste .

Wood shed's plum full, my Holz Hausens are not very pretty but they do dry wood pretty good.

I put most of my wood on pallet racks. I ran out this year and didn't have time to make more, so in desperation (had 6 cords of logs on the lawn in April that needed to get off the grass) I built a big Holz Hausen. It's about 25' in diameter and maybe 8' tall in the center. This was in April, and it's gotten a bit taller since then.rps20161011_101225_991.jpg

I'm a little nervous about how dry the wood is gonna be. I'm burning that wood in a monster firebox, with tons of draft, but i still hate burning green wood. Most of it will have been split and stacked for 10 months, but not with a lot of airflow.

The firebox is for my syrup cooker. It's 48"x48"x 20ish" tall. Grates the full length under the 4ft for intake and 28' of 20" stovepipe for draft.

Started covering a couple of the dry ones last night, was dark by the time I finished. I do this in the fall so when it rains it does not freeze up and get snow and ice on them later. Otherwise I leave 'em be. Important to just cover the top so air can move around through it. If I make some late I won't cover them until last thing before the snow flies.

IMG_1200.JPG IMG_1201.JPG IMG_1199.JPG Well guys I have not used my ms250 for awhile so I decided to get her out for a bit... got some shagbark hickory yesterday and even had the 18" bar buried once.... with a light hand she did just fine....I tell ya these ms250 are underrated I think....if you are a competent owner and know the limits of the saw, this saw is great for a firewood guy!!!!

Well guys it's firewood season remember to get some pics while you are cutting!!!!!

Now a word to the wise .I had cautioned a person about installing an auto cycle on a splitter and for good reason .Yesterday afternoon I pinched my pointer finger between a round and the slide .If it had been the cutter it would be gone .My cat like reflexs saved it .Barely broke the skin .Lucky indeed .If you loose your concentration for even a second bad things could happen to anyone .Chit can and will happen,be careful now .

Now that 250 in the above or a 290 is not my fav in the Stihl line up nor the fastest horse in the stable .If however you have a good sharp chain and keep it sharp and don't try to think your running in a speed contest they do very well .They've cut a lot of firewood so there must be something to them .

I don't have pics of this but cut up some old tires for use under the wood stacks.Took a razor knife just under the tread (top of the side wall).
Then cut through tread with sawzall or reciprocating saw metal blade.Works great

Hello AL... its a ms250.... it's not my favorite saw either, but it cracks me up because a lot of people act like it's a battery operated toy....I don't know if I got lucky or what, but mine runs damn good for what it is....

You see I started out with the smaller saws, and now I have the ms362, and the ms461.... I guess if a fella started with a ms461 and then got a ms250, ya he may be upset alittle....

For firewood guys, they will keep you warm easily.... for a logger, yes they may be worthless....

Time for me to get my wood inside for the year. All of it will get stacked under my garage. The doorway to the left of that stack is where it goes. I can fit about 7 chord under there. Most of it is ash, but there's some hard maple, and the one stack on the ground is all locust. I would like to find another 2 truckloads of locust for the overnight burn. The stack against the garage I put there in spring and the stack by my she'd was put there spring of 2015.

I checked a couple pieces in the stacks with my moisture meter and they read between 18/ 20 percent moisture. Should burn good in the gasser. Wife will be off all winter since we are having a baby soon. So I will have a full time fire checker. She does very good at keeping it going.
