I didn't get any pics of the pile of logs I set aside at my neighbor's place, but I borrowed a chipper and pulled it over there this morning to help him with his project.
The people who built this house dug a foundation into a hill when they would have been better off putting it on stilts. So he's basically clearing the whole lot so he can have a bunch of soil removed from around the house. He had about 7 or 8 mature hardwood trees dropped yesterday. Mostly red and white oak with a couple ash. He's got a couple guys coming for firewood, but neither really wants anything over 12" diameter and they're both hauling it home in half ton trucks.
So, looks like I get all the big stuff, which suits me just fine. I'll load it on my gooseneck and buck it up there, then pull my splitter alongside. I'll try to take some pics if I remember. One or two logs might get milled up, we'll see.
Anyway, here's what it looked like yesterday afternoon.
And here's what we tackled it with. It's very handy to bed able to maneuver the chipper right where you need it. Still need to add a grapple someday, but the forks are okay and the winch was great for pulling the big chunks off the piles of branches.
Edited to add: no, those dinky homeowner stumps are not what I'm referring to as mature trees. He cleared that stuff himself and hired a tree service to get the big stuff that was over the house onto the ground. I didn't want to introduce myself by talking *s-word about his stumps right away, but soon I'll mention that I'd be happy to give him a tutorial sometime.
