My Daughter loves helping me run the splitter and stacking wood. My Son does too at times. I don't want to spend my whole life working and miss their young days, but on the days I'm not at work, but am outside working, I try to have them with me, partially to learn and have skin in the game, but partially to spend time with them, outside doing something productive. At 8 and 7, they're starting to take pride in a nice pile of splits and a straight stack so I think I'm doing something right.

I happen to have access to Wi-Fi tonight, so I uploaded a video of splitting wood with my Gransfors Bruks splitting maul. The round is a 750# piece of red oak that's 42" in diameter. 6.5 rounds like this would make a full cord of wood by my math. I did pretty good, but after watching the video there's plenty of room for improvement. I should have started making a grid earlier instead of after about 4 minutes.

I should have edited out some of the time and left the cooler parts, but i haven't figured that out yet.

That made my tired before I even got going good for the day lol. I'll say it was very fast and the splits were very small. I leave mine two or three times that size so definitely would smoke the splitter.

Very nice! That's a nice pile of wood and of course saws. If you had to guess how much is that and will it carry you a full winter?

I don't have to guess!
That is 6 cubic meter, unprocessed solid log volume is taken into account.

It is a little bit less than I need for a winter season, I usually require 8 cubic meters (unprocessed), but I will have leftover from this winters firewood and I'll be clearing some bushes this Year and bring everything thicker than 1/2" home for firewood.

I do hope to get a early start on firewood for 2018/2019, if not my saws and my trigger finger will not be very happy!

Nice! Once I get the last 1.5 cords in, I'll be sitting on 10 cords seasoned and ready to go by this coming year's draw. That will put me at 36.25 CuMe and I burn 7-12/yr depending on the conditions heating an old farm house that's around 232.25 m2... I want to get to the point that I'm a solid 3 years ahead of consumption, which will make the Red Oak, White Oak, Mulberry and Osage Orange burn fantastically in my stove.

So true, it's a shame. Can't split wood with your iPhone.

When my kids were still at home, I had issues with my middle son texting instead of helping his brothers and I split wood. One day, while splitting, his older brother took the cell phone, put it on top of a round and proceeded to drop the wedge of our 34 ton splitter on it and through it. I laughed my ass off. A semi serious ruckus ensued, blood was spilled and it was a week before my middle son spoke to any of us. My wife replaced the phone, despite my objection, and the boys established an understanding regarding the distribution of work.

You can't split wood with an IPhone but you can split an IPhone with a 34 ton Brave splitter.

I spent the entire day in the woods but I had some ammo that needed to be shot and that got in the way of work. Still managed to get some cut and ready to split.

Had to rig two of them to get them where we wanted them. Leaners!

The one on the far right took my entire 32" bar with about 6" left in holding wood, hate it when that happens! But I love big logs!

Got to use another one of the tree service dumps. Took four more loads of the good stuff. Finished off all the smalls from the hickory and started on the piles of oak. Took one load of ash that had been dead and down longer as we are running out of seasoned and ready wood at the shop.

The real treat is that its a stellar place to spend the day by the river with all this abnormally nice weather we've been having!

Especially here where I mixed the new hickory in with the mound of cherry that was already there!

My neighbors son in laws firewood log pile, oak and beech - I got permission to buck it all up (for free)!


I used my Dolmar PS-7900 and a "improved" semi chisel TriLink loop, it kept cutting for another tank full after "pOWERsHARPing" (not a typo) itself on a stone that was lodged in a widow maker split/crack.


A little bit too confined space around the log pile for my liking, but it was fun.
Passing folk kept halting and looking.
I spent two tanks full of fuel.

Next time (maybe tomorrow) I'll bring my Dolmar PS-6400 and the Stihl Rapid Duro 3 chain along and noodle some knots!

When I say that I enjoy bucking firewood I get empty stares and shaking heads.

Bucking those logs was the second best spent time today!

Tell us more about your rigging equipment sir

It's a 4,500lb Thern winch mounted to a 4" Bullard, it straps to another tree. or it can fit in a receiver hitch. It has an auto brake on it so you can lower 4,500lbs with it as well. You can let go of the crank at any time of the pull or lower and it never moves. I have pulled some very hard leaners completely backwards with it.
I also have some other blocks that I have used from a third tree or truck to get better direction of pull.
My brother told a tree trimmer buddy of his that it was a boat winch, although it could be used as one it is far from your typical boat winch. This winch was $685 for just the winch (no Bullard) before shipping and the braking factor is what makes this a safe unit, there are no switches or levers to operate. You can literally operate it one handed with little effort.
