Im sure it isn't as bad as it sounds. I started in the mods on my 440 today since I had today off. Did a muffler mod and went on to advance the timing. I don't have a flywheel puller so I tried the method I used on the 026. Loosen the nut, leave it on, us a brass hammer and smack with another one. Well, after two smacks, my nut was f'd up! It didn't mess the crank threads up, just the nut. Here is my question, is this a just a metric flange that I can pick up at the hardware store? It seems to be a 8mm but not sure if the thread pitch. I'm making an order to HL Supply (puller, Wiha tools, etc) and they show one to fit, but it isn't a flange nut. Does anyone know the correct thread pitch so I don't have to tote the saw into Lome Depot?

I think your Stihl dealer should have em, no problem. If not, let me know, I have several I got from Mark, I can send you one.

I think the Bar Nuts are 8 X 1.25, but I'm not sure about the flywheel nuts, but I have em.

They are 8x1. I happened to stop at an Acr hardware that was a Stihl dealer. He actually GAVE me a new one. I couldn't find any flange nuts and asked him about it. He realized what it was from and gave me a new one. I about fell over! I figured it was at least a $3 nut. I do buy from them fairly often. He said it wasn't worth his time to ring me up.

Those pullers are relatively cheap these days .Don't go thumping on the flywheel because you'll only screw it up .If you go beating on the crankshaft stub like it was a railroad spike you take a good chance of screwing up the main bearings .--it's a chainsaw not a thrashing machine .Mumble grumble

i have the one for the 0 series stihl and one to the the 361 and it can be used on some huskys so i rarely have to hit one with a hammer and punch

I've got a puller, but it does not fit every Stihl I have (029, 034). When I don't have a puller, I hold the saw in the air by the handle, have the nut flush with the end of the crank, and give it a moderate sharp rap. Repeat as necessary.

So far, they have all come off w/o any damage.

You guys do know that Fastenal these nuts don't you? BTW the Husqvarna 450 bar is the same 8mm-1 Flange nut with smooth washer side. Costs about 0.13ea plus tax or at that what I paid last week for 40 of them. You also get them with nylon locks for a little extra.

As for loosening the flywheel all you need a is a M8-1.00 flywheel knocker. Threaded on all the way, back off one turn, and then smack the tool with a 2# brass hammer. I had my flywheel knocker custom made out stainless steel but they are commercially available from Stihl.

Buy an extra nut and weld it to a deep well socket. Screw it on the crank, hold the saw by the flywheel hit the scoket with a hammer.

if i have one that i dont have a puller for i loosen the nut a touch and use a hammer and punch on the crank

I never leave the nut on the crank, especially using a brass hammer.
That's the whole purpose of a brass hammer.....so you can tap the crank without damaging the threads.

Either of these!
Take the nut off. I use a pointed punch so it can't slip, or the brass hammer. Can't ruin anything this way.

Good lord,
When I say hit the flywheel that doesn't mean beat the chit out if it like a total ham fisted moron. Light taps that don't leave any marks with the right weight of hammer, and that's not meant for all models. One example is an ms201t will practically pop loose if you give it a hard noogie while others will require a puller.
