I used a brass hammer, pointed punch in the pilot hole, soaked with acetone/tranny fluid. I gave up and I am ordering a puller. Meant to today but life happened! I didn't get crazy because I know what can happen. I broke an output shaft on a batwing bush hog doing the same thing. Only it was with a 12 lb sledge!

Were you holding the saw up by the flywheel?
I usually wrap a length of concrete form string behind the flywheel and hold the saw up by both ends of the string, while tapping the crank.
If that don't work, I add a little heat

I guess what ever works for you. I don't have a brass hammer, I just use a regular one, but I also exercise a little judgement regarding how hard I hit it. Also, lifting the saw up by the handle so it can swing will help to reduce the chance of damage. The inertia of the movement of the saw is what gets the flywheel to pop off.

Ahh finally found that picture of the flywheel knocker tool I had made. I thought just post it so you guys would know what I am using to get these flywheels off. The machine end has a M8-1.00 hole up to where the hex starts. I got another that is 5/16 but Don't remember the thread off at the moment. You be surprised how well it works and there is no risk of damage flywheel fins either.

Tool is hexed to make it easier to install and remove.

You do not need a ring compressor .If it's done correctly the cylinder will have a chamfer .I've never used a ring compressor on a chainsaw engine .--but then again I'm a tad "old school ".

I've been told the same thing, but if they had them, I was going to add them for no more than they are.
