Trying out a 15" .50 sugi bar and Oregon VPX .325 combo today. All new to me as .58 .325 is what im used to running. Works out a bit lighter at 14 lb dead inc a 1/3 tank of oil (no fuel)..not bad for a fat Ass !

Took a trip down to the Beech woodland to give the 5105 and sugi combo some green hardwood ..thinned a few trees that wont come to much...12" max i guess.

Like the performance of both saw and bar/chain ..a LOT ! !

Noodled really strong too !...this combo is a keeper for now but will see about other .50 gauge chains to try as i use this one up.

They all go hollow like here?
They mostly are sound but we do get some very old "Park land "Beech 5ft plus ( old estates with early planted trees) that get hollow and craggy. Timber like in the pic tends to get harvested about the size of the ones you see.

I think every one I have over 18" is hollow. They do tend to grow on slopes like that and near water. I do have one that uprooted and is into a fence row I need to get to this winter.

Dam shame ...make lovely wood for furniture . Wonderful firewood though if nothing else.

Heavy. No market that I've found as timber here. A full cord(4'x4'x8') of it would tax your springs pretty good .

Oh yea ! its a grunt to shift . Must just be a popular timber over here then rather than in the US. Country furniture and sofa frames are just 2 of its popular uses in UK.

Nice combination there Simon
Seems about the right balance to keep the power going to where you want it...saw rpm hardly drops in wood under 5 inch.

What are you all running on the 6100 3/8 or . 325 . Im going to see what the saw feels like on some .325 . Figure there will be a slight lowering of the gearing due to 3/8 v .325 rim sprocket size.

I run 3/8 skip chisel on the 6100 and it loves it. 3/8 ps on the 420 with a 5105 clutch drum and custom rim.
The Ero spec for the 6100 shows 18 " in .325 or 3/8 options. Im just interested to see what the saw runs like on both combinations as i have plenty of bars and chains that sub over from the Husq saws.
My 420 is on .325 .50 LPX ..can swap chains from the 420 and the 5105 for ease due to the sugi .50 bar.
