Mine will be with me at the CT GTG. If anyone has a large echo bar and chain and will be attending, please bring it.

I'm having a hard time torturing mine with a 14 and a 20, but it pulled a 20 through oak with authority.

I think we learned a lot about this model, and more importantly, porting in general.

Great job Red.

Thank you sir.

I had the bar an chain hanging on the wall. It is a oregon uxl or D196 homelite bar. A few strokes with a file in the adjuster hole to get to the chain groove, it was ready to go. Little sloppy on the studs. But good enough for a few test cuts.

I was / am very surprised this thread took off like it did.

Pretty much anyone wanting to mod a 490/500 can use this thread to build their saw.

I happen to have a couple of 590's waiting for a turn on the bench....

Both getting the 620 coil;)

If they respond as well as this little fella I will be happy.
i think randy mentioned they leave a lot on the table when it comes to there porting. my 590 ran much better after installing the 620 coil and carb. i did a mild muffler mod to mine because they are very loud gutted completely along with a modded deflector.
it took about 8 tanks for mine to respond well.

Installing the 620 (unlimited coil) in a 590/600 does nothing for real world cutting performance. It may help in tuning the saw but it does nothing to make the saw "run better". My MM'd and tuned cs-600p runs real close to my stock cs-620p.

my 590 coil had a problem anyway and the 620 coil cured it when the coil got warm it lost spark so the 620 coil was a big performance boost.

If your original 590 coil "had a problem" then a new 590 coil would have fixed it just the same. The impression you are giving folks is that the 620 coil is in some way a performance enhancer for the cs-590/600 and I don't believe that to be the case. Yes, it's nice to have an unlimited coil for tuning but it is by no means going to make these saws run any stronger with just basic mods since they aren't running anywhere close to the limiter while in the cut.

This is probably true, but both of my 590's are getting ported, one mild and one more radically. So it should be benifical to install.

I like performance enhancers!

I'm not so sure about that. My MMWS cs-600p is still not running close to the limiter while in the cut. Don't quote me on this but I think the limiter is somewhere around 13k.

Don't get me wrong, if I had the choice between the limited and unlimited coils...I would choose the unlimited everytime. But, in the cut, I don't believe they make much difference. I might be wrong though.

I hear what you are saying.

I already bought the coils for the 590's. The 620 coil has a slightly different timing characteristics, and is unlimited.

The only way I can find out for myself is to put them on and try it out. So that is what I have planned.

While I don't have a ton of hours running saws, I do know what i like out of"my" saws.

I want to raise the max torque about 1000 rpm, and the over rev for limbing as much as I can. That is why I don't like the coil holding me back. Expecially in the 50-60cc saws. Since they are easy to handle all day.

Now if once these saws are built, and won't 4 stroke over 13,500 then it is just a waste. But I won't know until they are built.

I will agree absolutely nothing gained by swapping a 620 coil on to a stock saw. Other than the ease of tuning.

Have you tried it?
If not no need to call out someone who has. We are all about trying new things and experimenting here at OPE. And we are learning a lot!
The coils have a different timing curve as well as being unlimited and so they very well could be a performance enhancer, also could dampen it. Don't know til we try.
