Ok what was suppose to be a MINT 6000i. I paid top dollar $371.50 and it included a decent 6800 cylinder that I am going to put a OEM 6800 piston in it that I have. I never fired the saw but instantly took the cylinder off to start my project . First off I made a mistake by not asking for muffler removed picture or bottom of the saw picture. The way everyone was responding to the saw for sale it “seemed” like a mint saw.
Ok I took the cylinder off and found this piston .

The rings still have factory spec on ring end gap . The only thing wrong with the cylinder was the same beatings in the top. The walls and ports are fine . I was going to sell the cylinder and mint piston to recoup some money on my project . I might be able to get a few dollars from the cylinder after disclosing what happened to it.
I told everything to the seller and enclosed pictures and his main question was “ did he hide anything with his pictures”?
I know how I would have handled the deal and it would have been much different because no way is the saw worth that price with that piston. The saw would have not lasted a season if that .
Ok my question to the crowd “ what do you think could have caused the indentations?
My answers are .. small piece of wire that looked to be beaten in the top??? Did someone try and take a squish measurement with hard wire?
I took the muffler apart and found nothing in the screen. No score marks in the walls or ports.
I put the top end 6800 together and ran the saw for 2-3 minutes and took the muffler off to inspect ... no metal no scoring.
Thanks for opinions . Bill

I moved this to the general Chainsaw forum from Builder’s Review as it isn’t really about any particular builder.

In my opinion the piston doesn’t look that bad and wouldn’t have been seen at all perhaps without disassembly. I would not be afraid to run it.

I was able to see it when I removed the muffler. The top edge of the piston looks bad and I would not run it. A side view of the piston would be better to see it also. I looked over the screen better from the muffler and found this in the screen.

I have looked thru many engine failure analysis papers and the only thing I found was from a Stihl report and pictures. Photo number 39 foreign debris has entered the engine .

Me either or what the piston looked like. Live and learn . The saw was very far from Mint. I sold 6 saws in the last 5 weeks and everyone of them was in way better condition inside and out and I sold 4 of them for less than this one??? I just have a weak spot for this Dolmar model I guess and hoped for much better by the few pictures that was posted and the elated response from others seeing the ad.

Did you find anything in the engine out of wack? Bad bearing maybe?

I'd take that saw down to the crankshaft to be sure....

What response did you get from the seller?

Where was this purchased?

bad gas could cause that as well as water from what I have heard although I have never seen it.
the bottom will clean up easily try wd40 or mineral spirits and a toothbrush, wipe off the yuck.

Looks like a piece of welding spatter.....

Happened to a 268 I had that came across the bench because it was “tired”.
Someone had welded the muffler brace without removing it from the saw.

Piston looked just like that......but much worse
