I don't think he means members of this forum. I've seen the same out of "some members" of the saw community, but not from our forum.

I figure the members of the forums are either educated enough or are gaining education enough through their involvement in the forums to know roughly which parts are suitable to use from the aftermarket and which aren't. Buying a saw from an unknown seller on ebay is one thing, and is always a crap shoot, but it shouldn't be intimated that members from here are throwing up saws for sale that have say, low-buck Chinese top ends.

We always need to choose our words carefully. I get what you are saying my friend.

I can give a few examples of what Chris means I think. For now.....I'll just pitch the latest one out. I recently tore down a pretty nice 242xp. It was bought from a member on a saw forum, but not this forum. It had been scored in the past, and was not cleaned up very well at all. For the piston, it had a Golf installed. I've heard that some guys have had no issues with golf pistons, I've never used them, so I don't know if they will last or not really. I'd rather see a better piston in a saw I plan to turn the wick up on. The piston was already showing signs of scuffing again......and would not have lived long. Did the seller not realize that he did a poor job of repair, or was he looking to make a quick buck? I can't say.

Do you have direct experience with this? Because that hasn't been my experience at all.
Yeah I have I'm not sure if the member I speak of is on ope . Pm me I can tell you who . It was actually on 2 separate occasions . But I only bought one saw from him . The other saw was bought from a member who bought from the same guy I got a Chinese junk from .
Same song

I gotcha. I know there was one long time AS member who took some sloppy shortcuts on some saws at the end of their tenure. If you need OEM parts for that rig, lemme know.

It's like this... buying a saw is just like buying a car.
when you're buying a car, you want full disclosure of whats been done to it and how it's been treated, but that's not always as easy as it sounds.
I consider ebay to be like driving to the car lot. You know everything there came from an auction so it's a total crap shoot. The lot polishes the turd and sell at a premium.

Then you have AS. That's more like a private sale found somewhere like the paper shopper. A little better than the lot or maybe way worse, but at least you can wait it out and make sure the seller .seems legit and has receipts for work done.

Sometimes here on ope, a purchase can be more like buying a car from family...

Then you have my personal choice on buying saws and cars....

Buy broken. Then, completely rebuild it yourself so you know what you have.

This is the first jug ive seen that looked like this after such a short run. I am still going to play my plan out just the same as i doubt it will live long with what im planning on doing to it anyhow. If nothing else ill get more practice setting uo on the lathe. Thanks so much and im standing by to pay it forward.

Actually I was calling you Mr Seven. You gave me an address, but no name. Did you look at the label on the package I sent? It was addressed to Smokey Seven.

Now, about this project. I'd love to see more. It sounds very interesting.
