Cutting into a propane tank

Finally got a hole cut in it. Now should i try and power wash it out now or just cut away?
I kinda of figured if i got a hole in it if ther was some flameabke still in tjer the pressure has some where to go.

I'd start cutting but am a bit accident prone. Thought I'd broken my knuckle in a Foredom incident last week.

They do stink, every time I weld on one to make a wood stove for the Amish I smell like I rolled around on a dead animal.

How big is the opening between firebox and cook chamber?
You planning a vertical baffle, or open for airflow?
Is there a grease dam at the firebox?

Opening is about 4 inch by 10ish. I do plan to make some sort of a baffle ther to help defect heat a bit.
Havn't made a greese drip spot yet in it yet.

The stink is amazing. It just lingers with a person.

Take the valve off an old tank and pour out the accumulated mercaptine
Takes weeks for it to disappear.
Learned that when I started revalving tanks.
Never emptied them again

It seem to flow the heat how you wanted? If it takes a huge fire to get the cook chamber heated, you may benefit from a larger opening there.

We had to do that to a friend's old country Pecos to get it to run right. Cut his wood consumption to about 1/3, and much easier to maintain even temps.

Definitely want a small dam for the grease at the cook chamber to firebox, grease running into the fire can get exciting. Even 1/2" or so at the low point should work.

I have a tremendous amount of respect for those who can smoke meat. It is something that takes a lot of skill and knowledge. I grew up on the the Mississippi River and my Grandfather and cousins were commercial fisherman. They would build smokers from old refrigerators and smoke Carp and Buffalo. The hills here were dotted with old frigs like the hills of the south were dotted with moonshine still's. All those old redneck smokers are rotting away now.

So it had no problem gettin to hot temps. I need to build a damper for stack still to hopefully help restrict a bit.
As for a greese dam when i cut the opening for fire box ther is a good lip ther that i hope is enough to stop the grease from running into firebox
I think i need to try little shorter spits. The one i had on hand were about 14inchs long. Gonna try some 10 to 12 to try and keep fire closer to front of firebox a bit more.
Gonna be some tinkerin still till i get it figured out lol
