I have a short case poly lower I bought & decided not to use cause it had some cracks in non functional areas if you want to go that route - I bought another lower to have powder coated.

What is a short case? Is that half of a crankcase? Is there more then the two versions of the 066 crankcase, the older one with a smaller crank and the newer one with the larger crank?

There was a short case made with poly flywheel, larger crank on flywheel side, it was made in between the original short case and the later long case that the 660 was continued on

So the 066 has a small crank metal flywheel case, a short case big crank poly flywheel case, a long case big crank poly flywheel case and then became the ms660? Do you know the serial number breakdowns. Is there an easy way or obvious way to tell what case you have? Guessing from the original posters finding none are compatible?

Easy to tell the short case as they have a plastic plug by the oil fill, long case doesn't I believe. As far as the short case breakdown other then measuring the crank or having the flywheel present, I don't know of any differences that are easily seen. I have no clue on serial numbers either I have only come in contact with 3 of the short case poly flywheel saws, I believe them to have been made for a shorter period then the rest. But I am not an expert, I have built 10-12 of them and that's what I have noticed.

Yeah I think I'm at a loss with this case. Just split it and found the case half gasket not sealing either. Warped case? Were the screwdriver tip is the gasket is loose with the cases tight togetherView attachment 158503
What we are looking at here is a short case small crank 066 pto case half. Now its this side thats hard to tell the difference between it and a big bearing short case

Only difference i can find is 3 screw plastic brake cover, the newer had 4 screw cover. Only other difference is case volume and deck heighth. I can attest for deck heighth, found another set of small crank cases and matched up to the large bearing case, same measurement, 0.005 taller on the small bearing side

Would an 064 half work? Just need an 064 oil pump

The arctic generator mount on an 066 poly short case is the same as a 660. Metal flywheel has a closer more flush bolt pattern.

Not sure on the 64, i recall reading that the old 64 had the smallest crankcase volume out of any 1122 series

Flywheel side is same as early 066, PTO side is different

How so other than the oil pump? They the same crank until the big crank 066 came out. And the 064, early 066 and late 066 flywheel halves are all different.

I should clarify the bolt pattern is different from the 064 to the 066 as well for the cylinder base, they can be used just have to modify the cylinder. They used different seals in the later 066 and 660.

Finding that pristine jug was like finding a circlip that snapped off while installing it! This jug was the one i been searching for over 2 years now.
Cant wait to check the squish and see if i can do a gasket delete, i doubt it though. Most stihls i try to drop out the base gasket out of end up with piston kissing the squish band.

The piston is just as important as the jug.
