I have an arborist who stops by occasionally for another climbing saw.
He has an almost ritualistic testing process.
Always has his chaps on with helmet, face shield and gloves.
Warms it up properly and checks the throttle response, lines up and makes his test cuts from self feeding to laying on it trying to bog it down.
Then he checks the chain brake operation three different ways.
Then he checks warm starting at three times in succession.
I leave him the hell alone and watch.
When he finds the best one out of any batch I have available he always pays the asking price without haggling.
The first time I thought he was a weirdo, now I think he is meticulous.
Dave

It's bad enough when a saw gives you the fits when you're on the ground. I can only imagine what it would do to a guy, after climbing up a big tree.

Chainsaws are stupid! If you have not tried to start with switch off, put a chain on backwards, ran a chain into the dirt, or seen or had one burn down, You just have not used one long enough. Guy purchased a 372 from me and called next day, saying it seized, brought it back and removed a small twig from rewind and started right up. Saw was covered in dirt and still wonder how that twig got in there, using it to cut out stumps.
Some people shouldn't even be allowed near a saw

Had a chap say to me when looking at a saw "The saw will start from hot /warm wont it as my old saw wont" after showing him how the warm start procedure is activated on his "Old Saw" (ms 260) ... he tells me he wont need another saw now !!:BangHead:
Don't you hate that Simon

I went to our local hire outlet the other week with my friend they were working on a 395 getting it ready for rehire ,They had the clutch cover off and were putting the chain on and I noticed there was no rim sprocket on it . I said you haven't put the sprocket on there reply was yes we have what do you know about saws .I couldn't believe what I was seeing I went to the saw rack out the front and none of the saws had sprockets on them .Sure would have been a rough ride using those that was crazy true story

A guy had in a Jonsered 2172? (can't seem to remember exactly, but the 372 version), any way, the guy says to me, "My friends all have the Stihl Farm Boss, would I be better off getting one of those?" I kept waiting for the punch line, that never came. Told him not to worry so much about his friends equipment.

I lost a bit on that "No Deal " Todd !! ...things like that stem from "Not reading a F@342 manual " ...things like how to use the controls on a saw are the "basics " !
I know so many people that never read a manual doesn't matter what it's for pretty scary

Years ago went to buy a saw that was on Craigslist. Long story short I went into the house and talked to the guy for about 10 minutes. Finally got around to asking him about the saw and he said saw what saw? Wrong house.
Still cant believe the guy talked to me for 10 minutes and never asked what I was their for.

I know of someone who pulled the compression release in a PS6421 at a pawn shop and got it for $50 after showing them that the engine was shot since compression was next to none. Not honest but interesting
