Keep in mind that this forum is filled with a bunch of saw enthusiasts. Probably 99% of all people that use chainsaws don't really care about them other than their usefulness as a tool to cut firewood or make big pieces of wood small enough to drag out of the way.
Do you realize how many drivers out there have never had the hood of their car up? (and maybe don't even know how or what they would look for if they did?)
So it is fun to share the experiences we have with clueless saw operators but they are probably experts in a field we know diddly about.
I often take time to give people tips on how to cut safely and properly maintain their saw.

I have a buddy.. he's 73 or so now. Tells me his little MS 210 won't run. A 20 dollar carb later, runs like a top.... so I go to give it back to him.. he says "I'm scared to death of that damn thing, all I do is lend it out and it comes back broke! You can have it".... free saws are good

Now if I'm the one doing the buying, I will ask the seller to start it. This way when it doesn't run I can't be blamed for doing it wrong, and the price should go down.

This. I bought a used outboard this summer...kid selling it swore it ran great, he was asking $250. I had $150 with me if it started and ran with no rod knocks. Kid and his two buddies pulled and pulled for 45 minutes in the hot sun...I laid a $100 bill on the seat of the boat and said thats my offer if it doesnt run, I'll give you the other $50 if you get it to start. 20 more minutes, kid says f*ck it, takes the hundo and loads the motor in my truck.

An hour later I get home, swap a fresh set of plugs in (the ones he had in it were LOOSE) and it starts on the second pull. :campeon:

Depends on what size saw you want. 350,262,272,385,390,394, all have switches that go left to right.
I've had, or still have, a 242xp, a couple of 2152/3's, a 2252, a 254xp, two 55 Ranchers, two 262xp's, two 357xp's, a few 359's, a couple 562xp's, a 272xp, a 365 S, a 2165, two 2171s, a 2172, a few 372xp's, a 385xp, several 288xp's, a 2188, a 395xp, and a 2100 cd.

I am vaguely familiar with the way Husqvarna switches work. ;)

How about the ones that come into the shop complaining that the saw won't cut for nothing. One look and I find the chain is backwards. Kindly take the saw back, turn the chain around and put the saw together. And to their surprise in under 5 minutes I have the saw fixed. They come back the next day with amazed and begging to know what I did. I just tell them "I'm just a mechanic."

We had a couple that bought a craftsman saw, I guess Sears installed the chain on backwards at the store. This couple fought that saw for Months before bringing it to us. We smiled and tried not to laugh and "fixed" it and the same thing...they came back the next day amazed at what we did. lol

I took my MS260 to the dealer cause it was puddling bar oil over night. I'd had the bar off but put the bar and chain on before taking it in. A young helper or whatever noticed the chain was on backwards and was certain that had to be the issue. This was early in the flippy cap era and the cap was the issue. This kid had to be sent back to the shop to get him to shut up about the chain so the mechanic could try to figure out the leak.

I've put the damn thing on backwards before. I tryed to cut with it then stopped laughed and grabbed my other saw it's funny how you can do somthing like that when you damn well know which way it belongs because you did it wrong before...... It has been a good long time but I figure I'll end up doing it again at some point

This happens to every piece of small equipment my former employer buys especially saws. They leave gas in them all winter and part of spring so they are """""ready to go"""""" when they needed them since it takes a very long minute to fill them before use. I usually had to fix them before I used them.:mad::mad::mad::mad:

I did it once....and sent it home that way. Needless to say, customer called pretty fast. haha It was funny enough, customer's noticed and put the chain on right...called and even the boss's laughed. So I knew I was OK....still make to sure double check. haha!

I have an arborist who stops by occasionally for another climbing saw.
He has an almost ritualistic testing process.
Always has his chaps on with helmet, face shield and gloves.
Warms it up properly and checks the throttle response, lines up and makes his test cuts from self feeding to laying on it trying to bog it down.
Then he checks the chain brake operation three different ways.
Then he checks warm starting at three times in succession.
I leave him the hell alone and watch.
When he finds the best one out of any batch I have available he always pays the asking price without haggling.
The first time I thought he was a weirdo, now I think he is meticulous.

Maybe you could teach me how the frikkin screws and bolts work....they seen to be "French" and run off at every sign of trouble.
