One thing nobody seems to talk about. Do any of you do anything to the pistons?
" Lightning, Cleaning up the Casting flash or just Relieving the Corners"
I would think a lighter piston would be better without going overboard.

I have lightened and cleaned up the windows of a piston for a 024 and it's a very happy running saw.

That's what I was thinking, all them parting lines could be a place to start a crack.
But I have no idea if that would happen in a saw or not.

lightening pistons was the thing to do at one time. my experience from that time is that I had more failures. I may knock a couple boogers off but I no longer lighten. I may have gone too far but I don't know it is worth the risk.

when the transfers open the top of the transfer is open to the cylinder and directed by the roof of the transfers. The bottom of the port is the piston crown which is flat (most the time)

how do you think flow is against the sharp edge of the piston? I suspect that there is some adherence and charge follows the crown of the piston.

Scott puts a lot of them flat and I respect his opinion but in my mind there maybe something else involved.

I think the saws that make you wonder about this are the danny henry saws. some run better than others but they are know to run well.

I still remove the flash and open the windows a very small amount.

On the 026, cutting the dome off lightens it a bunch.

A few very experienced porters have told me that the've stopped doing piston mods cause they've never seen a bit of gain from it.

I'm always looking at saws like 4-stroke because that's what I know more about. I know when you build a high reving engine, you would put the lightest piston on as possible so it didn't try ripping the rod apart and beat the bearing to death.

I know there isn't much that goes between the two, But that's how my head works.

I never weighted a stock vs flattop,
Next time I will.

I use to grind on them also until I busted a couple,I didn't see any gain anyway.

I lightened a 288 piston for my circle crank saw but there heavy, may not be necessary but I did anyway.

I still may take some weight off the piston on my 372XT. The piston strato port moves past the port window by about an 1/8", thought it might do some good to remove the restrictions and shed the weight of the obstruction.

I don't touch a piston normally.

2 Rings & A Flat Top LLC would probably concur, for the most part.

Speaking of witch, where is knobby knees?

I stopped grinding on Pistons after I cracked one.

You lose velocity anytime you grind below the rings, is it really worth it?
You're wrong. It is worth it. Keep grinding pistons. The more you *f-word up and crack, the more pistons I get to sell you. You're killing my bottom line with your "logic" :) hi deets.
