Well I finished if the last Oregon Vangaurd chain I had.....I tell you these are good chains when the rakers are set right.....

Here is the wheel I use for all rakers.....I dressed it at an angle as recommended by oregons manual.....seems to work great for me....I know I took a lot of material off to get these chains to cut, by hand it would have been horrible.....once agian the grinder made easy work of these chains...

Also I will "dress" the groove out of the wheel, so it's straight across....the vanguard chain took a lot more grinding than any other chains rakers!!!!

Have you ever messed with this vanguard chain much....
I have some loops, but the 3/8 pitch saws I use always have conventional chain on them, so I have not really tried it.

It has been around a long time - meets the low kickback standard, so Oregon keeps making it, and a number of manufacturers keep putting it on their saws OEM.

Glad that you got it to work good for you, and thanks for passing on your tips for others to try.

I spose I could put the 5020 bar & chain on a 357xp just to put some time on the vangaurd chain, when I have a bunch of strong 50c/c saws, running a 5020 gets boring

I am glad I finally pulled the 3-loops of the 3/8s vanguard down and gave them a try.....they still had a lot of cutter life and I hate to see a chain go to waste lol...

But these chains seem to cut really nice once you get them dialed in....

Yes, I think you will like it, when you get it adjusted to how you like it....

Have you messed with the vanguard chain much....this was the first time I ever ground/filed any of it...

I've run it some on the 5020s, when you have a less than outstanding chain on a less than outstanding saw it's hard to tell which one is the drawback.
I think the chain will run pretty good on a strong saw.

Wondering if anyone has modified a oregon 620-120 grinder. The motor return spring is much stronger than the 511ax spring. I have to pull down on motor with more force on the 620 and it is difficult to have a lite touch when grinding. Often over heat a tooth or two from pulling so hard. The 511 just barely lifts the motor. The 620 snaps the motor back. I love the hydraulic clamping.

Only use cbn wheels.

That's funny you bring this up....I have noticed the same thing in the Oregon 520....I remember seeing post were people used something like bungee cords to keep the pulling distance short....

Paging @Philbert i know he will remember the thread....I would like to shorten the throw on mine also, it has a very strong spring!!!!

You can limit the head travel with a piece of rope or chain, but on the hydraulic model this also affects the automatic vice clamping feature . You can experiment and see if it works.

Ok guys, yesterday I got 7-more chains to sharpen,(one customer brought 2-chains, the other customer brought 5-chains).........so after I sharpen about 2-3 more chains, my 1/8 CBN wheel will be paid for with grinding profits!!!!

Any way thought I would share a few pics....also I did these chains with my CBN wheels....

Here is a horrible chain(it's a Carlton chain)

Here is a 3/8s Stihl RS chain.....I ground the teeth, by I haven't hit the rakers on these RS chains yet....I will heck them with my gauge when I get home....these gains are from a 1st time customer, so I want them to be very sharp, but not grabby....

Ok guys I need your thoughts/opinions here.....been slow at work, so of course I am on the net looking up ways to get better at grinding(yes I am obsessed).....

Anyway, I have been looking at threads on all the sites about reversing the wheel on my Oregon 520.....I have seen that you can use a drill to start the wheel in the opposite direction, then turn the machine on and it will continue in the reverse direction....

However, if I were to do any of this, I would rather wire a switch on mine.....now to my questions...

1-----Could I find/buy a switch from the older "511" models that has the reverse switch, and just simply wire it into my grinder....

2-----to all of you guys that have done this, what is the easiest/nicest way to put a "new" switch on the machine....

3-------Here is the most important question......does it really matter if you reverse the wheel....I have seen the burrs people are talking about.....now I could be totally wrong guys and please correct me if I am wrong, but does that little burr that I can pop off with my fingernail affect the cut at all.....that burr has to come off as soon as the chain touches the wood....I have looked at a chain after just barely starting a cut, and there were no burrs, they were all knocked off instantly....

As always I am anxious to hear your thought, opinions, concerns, and advice.....thanks a lot Kyle!!!!!

Well guys I have had a few more guys drop off chain to be sharpened....wow some of these chains I get are just absolutely beat to hell.....I feel bad for some of these guys saws, they basically burn the wood.....I just don't understand it.....some of these guys tell me they have cut for years, but when they hand me their chain, it's hard to believe it.....my dad instilled how important a sharp chain was as soon as he thought me to use a saw....when a chain got dull, he said load up, leave, or file that chain.....

Anyway, here are some "glamour" shots of some over worked and under appreciated chain....IMG_2143.JPG IMG_2145.JPG

Here is some finished product

Looking at the chain pics you guys post tells me there is something wrong with mine. Here is a comparison. See how deep my gullet is compared to Khntr85's chain?

I think my top plate angle is too steep. Pink wheel. Pretty sure I got it from Northern. The chains are just a little too grabby for me.
