Hey Mark, bin a while, how’s it goin?
Awesome lookin grind. That should eat!

Jim, I start with my older, less sharp files for the first few swipes too. Then switch to the good ones and progressively lighter strokes which leave the nice smooth finish.

Why would you believe this to be true ?

It’s the only square grinder that the vise actually swings on a center axis vs a swing arm style or the sdm where the vise is a solid mount. I’ll run down to the shop and get you a few pictures.

You can still get a razursharp or a swing arm to make a shallow top plate. Move the chain guide back on the chassis and it will contact the stone closer to the chassis, where it is less of an angle. Then move the stone holder up so the chain is at a higher angle of attack to the stone, which will lessen the top angle, make the underside more blunt and increase the side plate angle. I’ve done as little as a 5deg top plate on my rasursharp.

If you are only using a grinder for square chain, does the 'shelf' serve any purpose? Wouldn't the chips clear faster without it?

Thanks.

Philbert

That’s all I cut with is square for hand falling, which shelf? Do you mean the lower slides?

That shelf is called a gullet.
You can't grind the gullet without hitting the tie straps, it has to be ground in an additional step. Folks will leave them be for a few grinds just like rakers.
But you can't let them get much longer than 1/8" or they will bind in the kerf.

Check this out, it's from the fine folks at madsens:

I call the 'gullet' the area in front of the 'shelf'.

I get how the shelf can help help guide a file, but not how it helps a grinder. It also looks like an obstacle that the chips have to avoid. Looks like it could be removed with a round file or round grinder if not needed.

Just asking . . . .

Philbert

Normally I do, that was a chain sitting I just grabbed real quick when I grind a chain I’ll dress the wheel back to enlarge the surface which takes the gullet out.

Nice grinder. You have a better pic of your chain? I can't find an intersecting line at all

The wheel is a rougher one it’s hard to see the corner unless it’s up against the wheel or below making a beak. Normally I’ll start with a sight beak then raise the carriage till it’s corner to corner or sightly below.

Why would you believe that you need the vice to swing on a center axis ??

Done on my Simington

And, obviously, it needs to be done again after the chain saw a bit of use

I personally don't like any shelf, and I remove it with a round file. They say the shelf helps make a straight cut, but I haven't noticed a difference.
