View attachment 46649 Mike, this is how the clutch side bearing looks when installed in an 046. Gotta mount the oil pump when installing the bearing in the case. It acts as stopper to set the bearing depth. I believe you need to do the same thing when installing the 034/036 clutch side bearing
026/260's also

I knew I had a limited period of mild temps this afternoon, so I gave it a shot.

I tried, and I tried, and I tried to do it just like in Randy's video. Used the heat gun, then a torch, again & again & again.

You just reach a point where the hammer becomes your best friend. It is together, nothing broke, and the crank spins ... I'll live with that!

Installed the new seals today, and vac tested in with the old 034 jug, and it passed ... RELIEF!!!

Did not pass at first, then realized the intake was not blocked off correctly ... Whew!!!!

The garage is pretty cool today, so I limit my time in there, but glad I got this part done.

I also think I may have figured out what happened. The oiler worm gear is mostly stripped. Likely, the guy kept working the saw harder as the bar did not oil, and blew the bearing out. Once that went, the seal was a mess, no way it ran.

Most likely heat, from the lack of bar oil, caused the seal malfunction and the bearing crapped out shortly after....
YMMV

Hi guys -- any tips on installing the seals after the case is back together? Use a socket as a drive and just tap them in or is there more to it?
You have covered getting bearings and crank installed and case together well but wondering what tricks there may be w/ getting the seals in so they seal well and don't get damaged etc.

Thanks!

Once I get my parts carepackage from Bob at Ashokan Turf and Timber I plan to get with Dan to put this 51 I've got disassembled and cleaned back together. It will also be a first for me and learning experience.

Big E...
my tip is to buy the OEM install sleeve tools. they are usually under $10 for each series( Stihl anyway) and worth the price of a farked up seal or two.
plus they are "stepped" so you almost can't over install.
grease the lips and clean the crank prior and make sure they are "warm"...cold anything is bad when it comes to rubber.
what saw you doing ?
I have them coming for 1122 and 1128 if you wanna borrow.

Hey Angelo!

Cool -- thanks. This is on a Husky 51 that is getting an OEM 55 top end (open port since closed port OEM seems to be a bit made of unobtanium).

This is the saw that matty helped completely disassemble at Dan's GTG -- you guys were out making serious chips and I wanted to hurry up and finish disassembly so I could go play too... :)

Thanks for the tips. I'll make sure we're setup as best we can when I go visit Dan to try and put this thing together. Parts are probably here in a couple of days -- shipment from spike60 is probably happening any time now. No hurry on this one.

See ya.

My first assembly's were not so smooth with the use of the heat gun as well, then I bought one of those laser thermometer new fangled things of the Bay and found I was no where near getting them hot enough, took quite a bit more time to reach temperature than what I would have thought. Then it went real easy, just had to have enough heat.

Eric, as stated by Angelo, I just cleaned the crank, greased the inside of the seal, and selected the appropriate socket to install them on the 034. I went slow & careful, and it passed pressure test.

If you look at the crank, and case, and seal, you can figure where they ought to be, it is not rocket science.

I used OEM seals on this one, but also used Huztl on the 029/390 w/o any issues.

FYI, scotch brite seemed to clean the crank up very fast, with a real light touch.
