So you prefer to do bearings in the case first, then insert the crank. Any particular side you do first?

Just to clarify, I think the open end on the bearing goes toward the seal? I believe it is the clutch side that has an indented inner race.

Was very surprised that the flywheel side bearings from an 034 and 460 seem identical (except one was made in Japan, the other in France).
In 1125s (and 1128), the groved pto bearing points to the outside of the case. This is the seal surface.
Usually the bearings should be placed so the balls get the most lube (towards the crankcase area). Most AM 6202 bearings dont have the nylon cages that Stihl's may have.

These are 036 am bearings. The second pic is the reverse side to show the seal groove that extends against the oil pump.

Mike,

Are you sure the caps on the one side of the bearing don't pop off?

To further complicate your question, other bearings dont have that groove. The pto side is completely recessed like this:

OEM flywheel side bearing. Nylon caged 6202.

Not removable. Just the way they're designed.
AM 6202 w steel cages:

That AM bearing is identical on both sides. The stihl bearing has the nylon cage which the manual states should point to the outside of the case (leaving the open balls getting most of lube).
Another question would be: does it matter?

As usual, Randy's build thread is very informative & useful, thanks for the reference.

However, the bearing is being installed with the "open" side facing out, as I thought.

Angelo, the only "special" tool I got to do this is my $8 HF heat gun, that so far has worked quite well. I also made my own case splitter from an old rototiller tine!

Will not forget to use the oil pump trick, but I don't have a spare one!

Will not get to this today, but soon.

Thanks everyone, I think I'm ready to give it a try! Glad I asked the questions, was not planning on putting the oil pump on first!
The reason for this particular bearing direction was that the saw was an 044 (1128) and has the grooved pto surface similar to your 034. That's why the plastic is pointing towards the crank lobes.

So now that I'm all confused, the indented inner race faces the outside on the clutch side, correct???

And yes, they are OEM Stihl bearings, and the nylon race does not seem to be removable.

image.jpeg Mike, this is how the clutch side bearing looks when installed in an 046. Gotta mount the oil pump when installing the bearing in the case. It acts as stopper to set the bearing depth. I believe you need to do the same thing when installing the 034/036 clutch side bearing

My bad, that's actually a 044. Lol. Same thing applies though.

Thanks Mike, that is the way I thought! Check twice, install once!

Hey, since the race is nylon on these I guess it would not hurt to hit the inner race with the heat gun before inserting the crank? Any danger of doing that?

The confusion gets worse once you do a lot of saws from different series. You picked a good one for your first bottom end rebuild.

Always good to start with the Service Manual as a reference. great starting point.
then look elsewhere for the "why" and "why not's"
