Carlton "J2" 3/8 Chain Drive Links Too Close?

Any ideas what this Carlton J2 chain would be? I can't seem to find any info about it. Went to throw on some old chain to cut some rotten logs, and it wouldn't fit on the 3/8 bar tip sprocket. Seems to fit the drive OK.

It measures as 3/8, but see the pic compared to a standard Stihl 3/8 chain. Carlton is the bottom chain. After about 20 lengths, it's around a half length different.

Not too worried as I have plenty of chains, but more just curious. Since it seems to fit the sprocket, maybe it would work for a hardnose bar?

Just checked a Carlton box I have here mate and there was no J code chains mentioned at all sorry.

Yeh, seems odd that chain.

I d doubt it will be any good on a hard nose bar, it gonna knacker the drive sprocket

Looks like J2 is a Sabre marking for a 3/8" chain. J2-L7110-AS. Didn't turn anything else up sorry.

McCulloch tried to use this pitch in the 1970's. Didn't catch on.

used to be a lot of odd ball sizes- so one had to buy that particular saws mfg chain. Kinda like stilh with their different sized rivets than anyone else.

Yes, I have J1 (.050) and J2 (.058) on hand as well as McCulloch and Sabre in .354" pitch. Many of the 10 Series saws were supplied originally with .354 chain and many people tried to run 3/8 chain on the .354 sprockets and vice versa.

There were .354 rim type drive sprockets and Windsor style replaceable nose sprocket nose sprockets in .354 as well as .354 spur drums. The .354 chain was a nice try to keep customers coming to you for chain and accessories and the design of the chain/cutter proportions was a bit like .325 ahead of its time.

As noted, there were several companies offering the .354 chain; McCulloch, Sabre, and Carlton...possibly others as well.

If you think .354 was a little off the wall, what about Sabre .315?

I think the Oregon is # 45 chain, there's a 25 roll on EBay.

I have an oddball pitch loop that found its way to me from the US, it doesn't fit a 3/8" sprocket.
Gonna see if I have any pictures of it.

Funny how old discontinued stuff like this keeps floating around and popping up from time to time.

On quality Oregon 3/8" sprocket, no fitment, DL's are too close


On quality Oregon .325" sprocket, fits surprisingly well due to the tiny DL profile


Not .325"


Nor quite 3/8" (.375")


This chain is as new, its cutters show no dulling/damage, the DL's show a tiny bit of runtime.
Curious oddball chain that travelled to me over the big pond pretending to be a 84DL 3/8" loop and giving me fits trying to mount it on my saw!

Obviously I will not throw it out, but I can not use it on my saws either.
