Wow! Idles great and sounds snappy! Let's see her in some wood.

I found something to get a few good cuts out of. Not very stable, but at least it didn't spin on the stump when the chain hit it. It's pulling this 3/8 9-pin decently and I'd say it was a good improvement.

Nicely done Jimbo. I'm gonna have to try that mod on an 036. There's no carb substitute.

You kidding me Jim? Compared with the dangerous saw videos I used to make, that's highly OSHA approved.

Can you run a stock carb with the choke flap removed to compare?

How are you determining how much improvement is from hogging it out vs. the absence of the choke plate?

That things crying for a Vstack and a greenie meanie.

I'm thinking you can use an 044 boot and an older non-intelli HD carb if you swap out the choke and throttle shafts. tap the cylinder base or case for an impulse line barb.

Actually, an 038 boot fits rather nicely and has the hole for the impulse line.

I did this on a saw and it lost power. Seems the small stock boot must help with the 80+ intake floor these guys have. High end was a bit better, but torque was crap. I postulate that the smaller boot adds charge inertia and prevents spitback.

No carb really fits it Jim. I did a thread a while back on this and came up with nada.

So the shafts on a 44 carb are the same diameter as an 036 carb?

It expanded the powerband and gave it alot more torque. Before the mod it wasn't very hard to stop the chain while under load and needed a little finesse to make it look good.
Here's a clip of a stock wj39 running an 8-pin. You can see how the low end power is lacking and it falls off the pipe easier.
The 9-pin set up with the same bar and chain felt more than twice as strong afterwards.

That made a big difference Jim! Nice job. How much did you bore it out?

Huge difference in the performance of the airfilters on the 036. I put the mesh one in my stock saw and the difference was noticeable. Looks like I'll need to find another old style mesh one for that saw.
