@mettee I agree on the resin being the limiting factor. Also that laying the carbon into the bar wet would be best but too labor intensive.

@Hinerman thanks!! @Wilhelm my goal is ultimate lightweight…and rigidity. See above pic.

pitter patter best get at ‘er…

Hmm, those two don't really go hand in hand.
It's like wanting highest possible quality, but cheapest price.
But I am as curious as anybody to see how Your bars will turn out! :)

Good luck with this project!

Pics of your bars if you got them...

I haven't made one yet as I do not have access to a mill any longer. I just did all the ground work.

I do have them drawn out in solidworks with various types of pockets etc.

I posted them in another thread before. I had them uploaded to imgur but I can't find them. I think I deleted them so my idea wasnt taken

No its very easy and it goes quickly. Nothing to be concerned with. If you saw the pattern it might make more sense.

When you get done you peel ply, vac bag, clamp, and then heat.

Its not production stuff, these would prob cost 800 bucks when you factor in machine and labor time.

Right now I’m hoping to add $200 max to the cost of the bar.

1.Mill bar

2.Waterjet CF panel

3.epoxy in

if we can get enough numbers for production it should be pretty cost effective.

@Wilhelm carbon fiber is magic, trust me. If we can handle the heat issue… @SOS Ridgerider send him one so he will be a Believer! Haha!

(Or I will)

Who's gonna ship me a custom made LW/RW bar to test, preferably with saw attached to it?! :)

Meh, I don't need one - I am good with what I have. ;)

I think the hole is too big being milled out like that in one piece.

OK, stupid question - what heat are we talking about? o_O
The hottest I ever got any of my bars is that I could barely hold it with my bare hand.

How hot do You guys get Your bars on a regular basis, not under extreme conditions?

Personally I don’t think a bar will ever get hot enough to cause instant failure. However, the repeated heat/cold cycle could eventually cause a failure of the epoxy and carbon fiber. It’s really probably a moot point either way though.

I will probably be the only one to have a problem. Or the Aussies. @rogue60 maybe the west coasters cutting burning stuff…or recently burned.

The stuff I ordered from McMaster for the test mule says 180*. I’m sure my bar temps exceed that in dry euc here. We’ll see soon. There is hi temp CF out there too. Right now summitracing is looking like a good source for larger pieces.

It will be interesting to see if your cycles to failure is within an acceptable range though. I’m betting the benefits outweigh the costs… it’ll be fun finding out regardless.

I need some of that water based bar oil that evaps and cools.
