best weed trimmer head or line for heavy stuff

I've been using Echo Black Diamond. I got rid of the Max Power twisted line, breaks off too easy. The Echo Black really tears through the weeds. Did I do a scientific study? No. But I find that it takes me significantly less time using the Echo Black Diamond instead of Max Power twisted line. Also, a landscaper I know who keeps several crews on the road says his guys are 100 % prefer the Echo Black Diamond over other brands.

I did try the Black Diamond when it first came out. And it was just too brittle it would break off way too easy trimming around chain link. So yes that Vortex trimmer line not only is tough but it's so quiet..

The Black Diamond definitely cuts better, but probably 3x more brittle than the Vortex.

Because it is physically thinner line even if specs say it is the same OD!
Gotta up the OD on twisted/square to meet the endurance of twisted/oval as the outer corners make the OD.
It is even worse with star shaped line.

I have found that 3.0mm straight/square is something to behold in terms of heavy duty - although You need power to drive it.
It is like 3/8" vs .404" chain.

It’s also due to the actual physical characteristics of each line. The black Diamond is hard and brittle, the Vortex is much softer and extremely pliable.

Regular weeds and weekly touchups around grassy borders don’t stand a chance against either one, the Black Diamond definitely cuts faster and more efficiently, but if you’re looking to whack early growing briars and thickets, or (as previously stated) weeds growing in chain link fencing, the Vortex is a little more durable.

For me, the brush cutter is used for the heavy stuff, but future purchases will probably be the Black Diamond. NOT going to give or throw away the Vortex, it’s pretty impressive compared to any .090 line I’ve ever used.

Out of curiosity I pick up every piece of trim line I encounter during my walks with the pup.
I want to know what other people utilize.
So far, 99% is round profiled line, and ~90% is line thinner than 3.0mm/.118".
Most lines feel stiff, very few are pliable.

This is todays collection.


And this is a sample summary of each line section I picked up so far.
Ignore the short green pieces, those are mine from testing my custom made line cutter.


As shown multiple times before, my supply of nylon trim lines is fairly wast.
This years find that impressed me is the 3.0mm/.118" true square line that is so hard it smashed my weedeaters line cutter into oblivion.


Most of my spare stash.
I recently added a couple spools of 3.0mm/.118" orange round line, not pictured.


Also, this line head is the chittt.
Was 10€ on sale, I should have gotten a dozen of them.

Yuppers, got the Milwaukee M-18, a 30cc gas trimmer, and if neither one of them is up to it, I’ve got the Husqvarna multi/combi setup

I got a generic supermarket 43cc/1.5kW unit, it is slow turning @8000rpm max. but unstoppable.

I made a 4-string head for it to make up for the slow rpm's.

That M-18 trimmer has two speeds, it runs a brushcutter and a polesaw ……. It shouldn’t have a problem

That 0.170 sawtooth stuff was absolutely awesome. I ran it with 12” of line on a 4 string Shindawa aluminum hub. I went through (2) huge M-18 batteries and it never stopped, it also remains just as long as when I installed it.

I bet that teething does a great job separating fibers, and the lines thickness provides strength.

Shoot, I’d have normally used 1/2 of the 0.095 stuff, after fully loading it, going around the entire property.

Worth it ?
It chunked up a bit of ASSh-phault going along my Belgian blocks ………. gotta be a little more careful than agressive, like I had to be with the 0.095 stuff
