There are 2 different Oregon chains now. The older LG, and the new EXL. EXL has harder cutters like Stihl. The older LG chain is excellent too, just a bit softer metal. Easier on the files to sharpen. Still cuts well.

Someone is going to need to make better files. Recently I had sharpen 8 chains by hand and went through 6 files which is why I now have an Oregon chain sharpener as the all the blisters push me to it.

Pferd and the chains had the Tri Link logo. Customer couldn't or would not tell me what brand they were. I also ran into the same problem with a chain years where the Oregon files simply would not file it.

Haven't heard anyone mention Laser....supposed to be unbranded Oregon chain made in the US. Prices are good and have seen a few positive reviews as well

What i have heard and seems to be true is Oregon for speed, play, soft clean wood, stihl for work. Stihl holds an edge just a bit better.
Stihl sharpens a tad harder too and more expensive but used if on hand. Than there is the file size issue because Stihl always has to have their own special twist on things. On the Oregon chain, I use the Oregon 7/32 to start and switch to the Stihl 13/64 when the teeth are getting worn. On the Stihl I just use the Stihl 13/64 for the most part. I got a deal on Oregon chain so I use that mostly and it does a good enough job all around. Of course everyone's saw is their own and they are free to set their saw and run any chain and bar that makes them happy...

I gotta go put safety lines on a big leaning pine with two tops in the snow here in Maine and "get her done" while we have a day or two of freak weather (57 on Weds!!!). It will feel like the Tropics..Yahoo.

StihlMagnum440 running eBay special Archer 32" with full toothed chisel Archer chain...just started using the combo on some nice sized trees and for cheap set up it is getting the job done. I start daydreaming while sharpening the 32" chain...takes a while but sharpens nicely. Real funky tooth profile new as Maintanancechief pointed out and I am going to watch bar for wear because another forum member and the Chief warned about it. I like this forum for tips like that. Worst case is it a cheap short term long bar set up that gave me experience with a 32" bar and I can buy a better bar/chain combo later. Have a good one. Thanx for reading the book I just wrote haha.

Could have been tempered by sharpening. People with powered sharpeners tend to overheat the teeth.

Thank you...and it was a scarey cut and I am done for the day. Leaning both ways the wrong way. Right by backhoe that can not be moved until hydraulic coupling repair. Portable garage and camper within reach if tree fell wrong. If it went towards lean it woul either go in neighbors field (make me look stupid) or hit backhoe. Kept cable really taunt and kept tightening and hitting wedge bit by bit and slowly. Dead tree that I was afraid might have weak hinge or rotted. I finally tightened come along as tight as possible and let the tree sit for a moment and then she gave! Phew! All the six trees I safety cabled down were around garage etc. . All done but a crane/bucket truck was the proper safe way. Calculated risk. End of big problem trees!!!
