Bad cylinder on a brand new 346XP, what's the best thing to do?

I am pretty sure I still have the 1st cylinder he built me, I will take a few pics after work.

I know a lot of grinding don't always make a strong saw, and a rough grinding won't always make a poor running saw, but the first one was far from perfect, it was fine and the saw was really strong. But it failed, a whole part of the cylinder broke in the middle of the lowers. Another member told me this could be because of the poor grinding, I don't know if it's true, but for me, it wasn't a big deal, it was my 1st ported saw and she last me a good year or more.

Then, I replaced the jug by a new one ported by Brad. And I can't tell you how impressed I was by the quality of his work. Everything was smooth and shiny.

Of course, the saw was not MUCH stronger... But it was.

And this cylinder has today at least twice more running time and it is still perfect.

2 weeks ago the piston ring pin broke and destroyed the piston, but the cylinder should be salvageable and I will rebuild it.

So when I saw the quality of the porting job on this saw, I knew from my own experience it won't make the saw as good as the 1st one, and I know it won't be reliable.

Glad I see it before it failed, the saw is brand new and a good 346 case became hard to find.
Mechanical things break no matter what precautions are taken sometimes. Quality work always helps along with attention to detail with cleaning, beveling ports, etc. After a good quality port job then its up to the owner to use good fuel/oil, tuning, clean filtration, and use. With yourself logging and using these saws thats a pretty good testimony for any saw to hold up a few years? Ill probably never put as much time on my 346 as u do in a few years

I see your point. And I know there's no saw which will last forever, especially the way I use them. But most of my saws have seen hundreds of tanks, actually the most impressive (for now) is my WWS 562. I had to finish the work myself, but this saw has put way more wood on the ground than any of my coworker's 562.

If a ported saw last me 2 years it's OK.

I hear u fellow. Thats impressive! Theres a logging crew passing my house for the next few weeks clearing for a subdivision. Just being curious I drove up to talk to the boss and I had a few of my ported saws to show and he looked at me like I was crazy!!:D He replied, " Son, the insurance company doesnt allow saws on the work site, only our machineary and polesaws"!!! We then discussed him skidding me some hickory logs out for smoking on the pit and he agreed:)

Honestly I was really surprised to see how long some of my ported saws lasted.

I know every saw will fail soon or later, and I take really good care of them, but it's really impressive to see some of them so strong after so much running time.

Randy told me once a ported saw won't last too long for a professional use, I told him it's the same for stock saws.

But today, I can tell you a good ported saw can last me just as long as a stock one. That's how good some builders are.

I totally agree. I know a good port job before a new saw is used has probably corrected many factory faults that wouldnt had been seen otherwise

Yes I remember this transfer cover seal on some 550.
Yes I had one and used sealant once I cleaned the covers up and reinstalled. Husqvarnas are almost extinct around here as we have no dealers close to me. When folks walk in my shop and see all the huskies of mine and my 1 064/066 sitting there they look at me like u r in Stihl country??!! U like Husqvarna??!!:D

Wise words. I can't imagine being "on the hook" for so many saws/end users. You never know where the saw is going and how educated the buyer [of your work] is. Doesn't take much for things to go south, as we all know.

I've been in other builder's saws that looked sloppy also. But they ran like hell...

Pretty ain't fast or reliable. I agree that one expects a certain level of attention and time given to a port job when it's paid for. But if the saw runs great and lasts, can anyone really judge what the porter has done to make it happen?

Who is the end user to decide what the job should like inside if a saw is dependable and runs great?

You get what you pay for, which is experience.

Very well said! I think this point is becoming overlooked. The more pics shared on the web, the more expectations are raised for very pretty cylinders. All the ported saws in my possession run like raped apes. I simply care about the end product, not how it's achieved.

Trust me, I take care of my saws, and I clean them every day after work.
For sure, pretty doesn't mean fast or reliable, but the 1st cylinder looked way better than this one, ant it failed way faster than Brad's one.

I done the same Randy best decision I ever made for me and my family.

I hope this will never be an issue for me, I don't drink strong alcohols, except when I'm sick, but I really love to share a beer with my buddies.

A good beer is liquid frienship.

Yep
I am / was the same way.
1 turned into 3, 3 turned into 8, 8 turned into as far as I could get before puking.
Wife gave me option. (Multiple times).
I finally listened

I feel for you, and can't imagine what it's like at the same time. I'm fortunate to be able to have just one, and be completely happy. If that ever stops, I'm pulling the plug.
