Competitor #2 is the Hyway or Myway. The first kit I purchased was not usable. It was Myway so I sent it down the Hyway. The rest of the package seemed like it was worth giving it a second chance.

The new kit is much better.

The plating seems of decent quality as does the piston. Ports are what I would consider above average. The chamber looks good but I was getting a bit uneven squish. Rings appear to be manufactured by Caber (Hyway ring on top) and are of a proper iron . Came in with some interesting numbers. .027, 97/120/79 gasket required but not provided.

The negatives are exhaust port shape and the piston is contacting something @ BDC that I have yet to identify. I did not notice this issue with the pop-up in the first kit.

Whoops, shouldn't be doing this on my phone with no glasses, lol.

Looks borderline flat, as Kevin said, make sure it's got a good bevel and check the floor too.
Other issues I've found on them have been loose casting boogers, sand/grit stuck in voids in the transfers
and the squish band being substantially bulging/inverted/tapered in toward the combustion chamber.

Yes there was definitely casting sand in the transfers.

Those are pretty bad numbers, the high exhaust lends itself to being a revy rather than tourquey and that much duration on the intake will make for a gas pig. Then there’s way too much blowdown and not enough case comp.
Exactly; the other half dozen of the kits I built had much better numbers and ran a bunch better, figures the one I built for myself is crap... LOL
Thing is a box of parts until I get a better cylinder for it.

The Cross cylinders I got last week have very sharp edges on the bottom of the exhaust and intake ports. The piston skirt can firmly catch on the sharp lower edge of the intake. Whether or not they beveled the edges doesn't mean there's a smooth transition over the edge.

Add the Warhawk cylinder kit to your lineup. $60 from HLS

I was able to trace the contact between the Hyway slug and the crank to the inside of skirt. The thickness surely is excessive. The photo shows what I did. If I had a crank in hand instead of in the saw where I could see nothing... You may be able to do something other. If my sample size of 2 is accurate they all will make contact. Now that issue is no longer an issue so I am very pleased with the Hyway piston. The skirt is wider than the pistons that have a tab on the side and the weight is reasonable. The jug is going to be a problem.

Just a few updates. The Hyway cylinder was deemed unusable in stock form by me. The issue with the flat exhaust roof was the main reason for this decision. I am moving forward with porting it. That makes 2 Hyway Kits with unusable cylinder out of the box and a piston that was a no-go as well.

The stock cross cylinder is mounted with the modified Hyway piston and is ready for testing.

The Hyway cylinders, was it Titanikel or Nikasil cylinders you buy?

It is not the Titan. I am not crazy about it. it's thin, chips easily and the entire combustion chamber as well as most if not all of the ports are coated by it so porting it sux. lol.

Yes, the Titanikel is very hard to porting.

I was speaking to the regular cylinder. I have no experience with the Titan.

The verdict is in on the Cross Cylinder and Hyway piston combo. All I did was work the port windows over with some 400. It looks the part and it delivers making for a great work saw with plenty of juice and a wide powerband. I don't want to say it does not feel like a ported saw. It makes for a great cutting experience. It just lacks a racey feel that many ported saws have. Given the fact it's not ported it can be expected. I will see about finding some wood to test these in and sharpen the chain.
