MY goal is to compare as many of these P/C kits as circumstances will allow. We are going to run these things stock and ported.

Coming in at the #1 contender spot we have the Cross MMWS.

IMAG0027.jpg IMAG0029.jpg

The plating looks to be of a substantial sort. The ports are huge and have decent shape. What your getting here is a true performance production jug. A pseudo port job if you will. The numbers come in at .025, 100/120/80.
Other than a bit of a sharp chamfer on the intake the ports all look 100% serviceable.

Now for the ugly. The piston looks similar to the Huztl but is of a much lighter construction coming in over 5 grams lighter. The skirt is next to razor sharp and almost as thin. The material seems to be softer than the Huztl as well. IMHO this thing would be lucky to hold up in a 5HP saw.

The chamber is suspect as well with a .010 ridge running the bore circumference. The good news is you can use the piston for a sanding block to clean it up, lol.

If there is any Meteor fans out there that want to lend me a kit for testing I will be happy to include it.

The roof and floor of the exhaust port on these have potential to be too flat and not enough bevel. Unless they’ve changed them in the last few years at least. Just a heads up so you don’t ruin a new piston and/or cylinder

My kit saw never felt as torquey as it should, and I could suck down a full tank of gas in 10' of milling 20" wide pine.
I never timed it out when I built it, but I tore it apart a while back... .020 squish with gasket, 92/121/90...

swap a meteor piston into the MMWS cylinder, that's what I'm doing with mine.

This will remain with the cylinder for testing. I read some reviews saying the piston was a problem so I was prepared.

I've used several of these Cross MMWS kits and one of them the base was substantially off true in relation to the cylinder, and it wrecked the saw it was on (broke a piston pin clip and loosened the piston pin in the piston - carnage). Just something to be aware of and maybe check.

Care to offer an opinion?

looks about like mine does, fairly flat but actually has a slightly raised center. I'm waiting on a few oem parts to show up before I tear into my saw.

I went over the bevels and cant feel any "sharp" corners at the top or bottom of the ex port. also removed a lot of casting flash.

This one checks out OK but thanks.

Those are pretty bad numbers, the high exhaust lends itself to being a revy rather than tourquey and that much duration on the intake will make for a gas pig. Then there’s way too much blowdown and not enough case comp.

Varying photo angles in general make it difficult to judge, sort of need to see the top of the piston or ring near the port floor/roof for reference.

There is a ring in the port bro.

I have had pretty good luck with the fit and finish of the Meteor stuff. ,but I haven't tried any of their cylinders. Thanks for posting the pictures.

I really liked the overall finish of the Meteor cylinder, the cooling fins are thinner & that cylinder weighs considerably less than the CP one.

hopefully soon an OEM 660 cylinder will be at my house, then I'm going to compare all 3. I have a 650, which probably isn't much difference but I want compare apples to apples & compare them to the 52mm 650 top end.

When I put together my round top 066 I was doing some trading with other members and ended up with 3 different top ends for it . I was able to clean up and salvage the OEM cylinder but the piston was wasted. I have an old FT big bore and a regular FT cylinder.
The OEM is noticeably nicer looking in its bright aluminum finish but the squish numbers with any of the aftermarket pistons were going to require machine work. After measuring the different combinations I put the regular FT and the Dukes coated pop up piston in it which gave me 20 something squish with a bgd.
The Meteor piston is by far the nicest in the bunch though so when I do another one w/machine work it'll probably get used.

Whoops, shouldn't be doing this on my phone with no glasses, lol.

Looks borderline flat, as Kevin said, make sure it's got a good bevel and check the floor too.
Other issues I've found on them have been loose casting boogers, sand/grit stuck in voids in the transfers
and the squish band being substantially bulging/inverted/tapered in toward the combustion chamber.
