Anybody dye plastic chainsaw parts?

Thanks everyone. This was a saw that @Hot Husky 365 bought from Rodney. It's been a little project saw for me to tinker on.

It does well for a 2150/350 cylinder, thanks to your help in laying out port timing lines for me to grind on! I haven't messed with timing yet. I will soon.

Looks great Jason! I saw that at the gtg and figured it was dyed! I love how my hybrid turned out!

Thanks Dan. I really like yours, and others in this thread and beyond. I love the changed color schemes, especially the orange and black Stills. They look awesome.

Just curious for anyone who has done this: how deep does the die penetrate? In other words, will a deep scratch show red/orange/white, etc.?

Can't remember who had a thread on this before but the dye went a lot deeper than you'd think. Pretty sure scratches aren't a problem.

The longer they simmer, the deeper the dye. 2 hours is maybe 1/4 the depth of the plastic

Plus I let the parts in da tub for the entire cool down. We’ve used it for firewood’n and it’s gotten scuffed. Nothing but black.

Seems it holds up decent.. Anyone try pink?? If like to die all my saws hot pink..think the Orange would be covered well?

Not sure if I posted this yet but here is a piece of oem Stihl plastic that was in the dye for about an hour. I cut it to see how deep the dye went. I was happy with what I saw.

Pretty good for fabric dye, heck that's pretty good for any kind of dye...

Plastic paint may be a better option, since you are going over a bright color with a lighter color. Maybe find a trashed carb cover and run a test first>

If you go plastic get the krylon at walmart, I used it with clear coat over top on my one 066, came out well

Walmart sells the bottles of dye think they are good for several gallons, hobby stores also sell it
