I'd bet 6 or 8 coats of poly (or another) clear first, then carb cleaner or lacquer thinner to remove it when you're done

Or if you did a clean job taping off for the clear you could leave it on. Might help keep the plastic from yellowing with age.

Might. I was thinking in case the dye somewhat penetrated the clear. But yea, if it didnt, by all means, leave it on

Hard to tell in the pic, did it opaque the tank. Or is it still slightlyvsee through?.

I probably would have used a sacrificial fuel cap to keep it out of the inside of the tank. Not sure what I would have done to the outside though.

I did use a cap and let's just say it won't be used on a saw! Something leaked and dye got in the tank. When I removed the masking the tank was no longer transparent. So at that point I decided to put it back in the dye and make it all black. It turned out awesome. Indoor pictures suck but here they are. I'll show better ones after work tomorrow!

Very interesting thread. Nicely done. Now I'm starting to wonder if you could dye a black piece a different color? I have a Jonsered so it's off colored to most people from the start. Haha

All you can do is try it. They sell whitening dye, not sure if it actually dyes stuff white though.

O44 I did a year ago, dyed all the white plastic, painted all the mag, sanded and cleared the orange. The saw looked terrible , I started looking for a new tank and said screw it I am going to try something different. Pulled the orange gas/oil caps from a 029 i had IMG_20160209_212309820.jpg IMG_20160209_212222759.jpg
