It sure isn't Ohio pine! Yes it's the Ash I took down last year in my neighbors yard!

There's no Ohio pine in Pennsylvania, but there is pasfyrofoam tree It's from the balsa wood family.

Anyone ever done a complete plastic saw, like a 350 or 455. I'm tempted to do one myself.

Also does it matter how well the plastics match before you dye them? Not sun faded, but a different shade. Will it still turn the same black?

Hedgerow did a couple all black. He posted pics on the first page of this thread. I don't thing it matters what matters most is the gloss or shine of the parts. The carb housing plate was original to the saw. The covers were new Farmertech. The carb housing is the same color black just very flat black.

IMAG2207.jpg IMAG2209.jpg IMAG2210.jpg IMAG2211.jpg here's my attempt at dying chainsaw plastic. I stripped it all the way down degreased and washed all the parts. Did a lot of trial and error and ended up using a 22 qt stock pot and two bottles of rit dye. Just because it seemed appropriate I used my wood stove in the shop to heat the concoction. I boiled each peice for about 45 minutes each. Having to flip a couple of them because they were a little too big for my pot. The color is even and I don't notice any lines where it may have gotten darker on one half more than the other.

I like it!!!:tmnt:

Also I don't have a pic of it, but I died a cull top cover to test out my methods. And when I finally ended up where I did with boiling it on the stove it looked a lot better still ugly, but better. I have to say the dye penetration is pretty good. I took my knife and just scratching at it no orange shows through. I decided to cut a part of it and the black went pretty deep.

Very nice! I'll be doing a tank for my hybrid tomorrow! Just have to figure out how to mask the clear tank side and keep the dye out of the tank!

I just let it dye the inside tank too. I assume that it will still be see through. If I ever do a stihl I think I'm gonna do the white bits in red.

I hadn't really thought about the clear tank until yesterday. I decided I wanted to leave it undyed. Might be difficult though with the fuel line, vent, flippy cap and the large area to mask off. If I don't get it all covered it will look horrible! Good thing is if I mess up masking I can just throw it back in and dye it all! I'm going to make a video on this one!

I say if you have a scrap tank dye it first and see how it turns out.

You just need to figure out how to keep that translucent portion around the cap out of the dye - suspend it with wires to something rigid. Then, it will require moving in several different positions to dye the parts you want black, and preserve those that you do not.

I did think of that but I don't think the diameter of the pot is big enough for doing it that way!
