I agree! Climbed on a couple different static displays years ago and never even dreamed we’d get to see one run again. That whistle stirs the soul something fierce.

Cool! I love those old steam locomotives. Man if I would have been born in the days of steam I'd have found a way to work on them.

They ran the Allegheny 2666 engines in these parts. I'd give a week's pay to ride one up out of the New River line.

We were down at Steam town a week ago, that is one big chunk of iron! They have a really cool museum there.

No it is not.

From where I was standing you could feel the heat coming off of it as it passed.
I'm sure that cab is hot as all get out.

The whistle on that thing is very intimidating.

I love old steam driven machinery, raised around it from mills to mobile stuff like tractors, threshers and locomotives. The operators needed to know their stuff, there were no computers looking after the running aspects of steam. Both engineer and fireman had to keep a sharp lookout and pay particular attention to the water level on the boiler, low water was a recipe for a boiler explosion, condensation/water in the cylinder was sure to blow something, head or cylinder apart, was good times then.

There's always been a conversation which big freight engine had the most power .The C and O "Allegheny " and the Big Boy were not used in the same locations so the puzzle most likely will never be resolved .
I worked at the former Lima Locomotive works for several years as a welder where the Allegheny was built .A restored example is in the Henry Ford Museum on static display https://www.thehenryford.org/explore/stories-of-innovation/what-if/transportation-allegheny/

Steam is simple but very dangerous if not monitored and maintained.
I have 2 boilers in my drycleaning business.
A piece of bamboo made into a whistle then stuck in a return line after the steam trap can be heard all over town.
Got a beating for that one over 50 years ago.

I've actually been there to see that one. What a great experience that was. There's magic in those old behemoths.
