As I ponder the only thing that makes sense is the 23 year old filter. Lol

A better flowing filter would most definitely help.

But..... There has to be a little more power in these carbs than what we're gettin

I can grind the venturi out and make a big gain,it just won't idle.

Ok, only thing I did is lower the metering arm to sit flush. It seems to sound a little better coming out of the cut and doesn't race before returning to an idle.

But after it idles for a bit and you blip the throttle it bogs. It died the last time when I blipped the throttle.

I checked rpm and I was 13,850 let it idle for 5-6 seconds and hit the throttle and it died.

Terry can help is there...no doubt.

You ever make that giant V stack?

Nope. I'm behind bad now. I'm trying to keep up, but failing.

I switched out the screen and diaphragm to the ones out of the Walbro kit and it won't even fire. My guess is the shorter stem isn't even touching the metering arm

Tried to buy one once, it was on eBay as a Bing 49. Ended up being a Bing for an 038

A very small amount is all it takes to make a difference on the metering arm.

It should set flush with the inside of the carb
It was high to start with, so I'm slightly above where it was originally and I'm goin to shim the spring and see how it runs. Would copper be ok to shim with?

I checked rpm and I was 13,850 let it idle for 5-6 seconds and hit the throttle and it died.

Erratic idle and changing tune like that is an indication of a small air leak. I had an 064 that was like that and it turned out someone had mix matched case sides and there was a slight step between them which was causing the base gasket not to seal when warm.

I've also seen where the saw will run fine up top but drown in fuel at idle to the point that the low side needle doesn't do much. It was because the needle in the carb would not seal properly and keeps letting a little fuel in, at WOT it wasn't enough to cause an issue. Have you put pressure into the carb and made sure it could hold at least 10psi with the needle?

I also ran into a 066 that would start, idle, run for 1/2 cut and die and wouldn't restart till you choked it. It had a plugged impulse barb in the case and with the choke set it had enough vacuum from the venturi to pull fuel into the carb, 1/2 cut and it would drain the carb.
