Beautiful work my friend. I know it's a Lite, but to me 288s look odd without the seventh mount.

And I think that mount really protects the front of the saw!Beautiful work my friend. I know it's a Lite, but to me 288s look odd without the seventh mount.
Same here. Likely why so many 288’s don’t have beat up cases in the frontAnd I think that mount really protects the front of the saw!
My 281 was pretty beat up looking. When I tore it down and cleaned it I found that most was just the plastics. The front of the case and muffler were in incredible shape for a 33 year old saw!Same here. Likely why so many 288’s don’t have beat up cases in the front
This 281XP lives a horrific life as a communal saw on a 700 acre estate with ancient woods, mainly pulling a standard weight 30 inch bar and full comp semi chisel chain, and it hasn't shown any external damage without the 7th mount. Internally is a different story, but outside, there is no damage. And I think that mount really protects the front of the saw!
Really cool that saw is still out working that much...a testament to design and power. This 281XP lives a horrific life as a communal saw on a 700 acre estate with ancient woods, mainly pulling a standard weight 30 inch bar and full comp semi chisel chain, and it hasn't shown any external damage without the 7th mount. Well, the secondary coil gave up the ghost recently
No one locally has it in stock, so she's sitting in a shed right now.
Has anyone ever tried just a regular Husqvarna coil as a replacement? Are there any known models that would have a similar timing curve?
You would think one of the 394's or 5's would work...if they fit.
You won't regret that decision!Well the cylinder didn’t cleaned up as well as I had initially hoped. There were 2places where the plating was coming off, and slight almost invisible vertical grooves (beneath the plating???) Combined with the need to put an insert into the muffler bolt and the certain loss of the plating which would lead to a seized ring I decided to buy a new OEM P&C. View attachment 183567
If I had other coils to try in my 288xp I would just to know if there is an alternative. I'm going to keep this in mind the next time I come across a Husqvarna of similar vintage with a single unit coil to see if it will fit and if it will work
I’d replace the filter if it were my saw. Is there a plating chip in that groove in the center of the exhaust port or is it aluminum transfer?Cleaned up most of the parts from the 288...
Need:
Bearings
Seals
Gasket kit
Brake guts and handle
Piston and rings
Has the high top air filter, you guys think it’s useable?

Some light transfer and possibly a small vertical scratch below the exhaust port

Here is the air filter
She’s pretty bashed up as you can see.

That’s what I was thinking as well.I’d replace the filter if it were my saw. Is there a plating chip in that groove in the center of the exhaust port or is it aluminum transfer?
If you part it out, I call dibs on the high topThat’s what I was thinking as well.
I think I’m going to part it out/sell it as parts.
Too many projects, and not enough time!
