the top cover hole is a sort of prefilter. sucks air in hits the wall the dirt falls and cleaner air can go into the filter. I think I first saw that on a partner 5000, late seventys innovation. it works well though.

you are missing a part that holds the back of the filter up.

View attachment 38651 A mfg date would be good if anyone can eye that up for me
Looks like 26th week of 1991

View attachment 38652 This looks dickd with to me ? The threaded holes are for what? Top cover uses one not the other Air filter nasty as *s-word Anyone that could lend a hand with advice would be good
The extra holes on either side of the intake block were used on previous models that used a different style intake. Some had them, some didnt

Also realized now there is no felling dogs. Need those as well if anyone has those and the hardware necessary I'd appreciate it. So but yeah it runs rim sprocket is toast also sorta could use some help on what the correct one of those is for this saw I know I want a 7 3/8 just not sure what size spline I need
It uses a 7 tooth large spline sprocket. Same as other 70ish cc and up saws use

It did come with that bar d009 20 inch 3/8 which kinda worked out nice as I have another saw that runs the same chain I figure the bar to be worth a fair amount It's never been run paint still on the top rails

I guess if parts are all available no need to be shy about it is the av acceptable ?
The 272 was designed to compete with Stihls number 1 contender of that period- the 044. It is very comparable to the 044 in feel, umph, and weight. It's a great saw. Parts are readily avail. For the right price, and if I had a need, I wouldnt hesitate on owning another.

That came straight from Spike 60s mouth. I believe in this video

I'm not concerned with the cosmetic end of things basically needs to be tuned and a chain brake with a set of spikes will be all I'm needing looks like someone gave her a bit of a hard life or used it a hella lot The guy told me to take it to a shop to tune it because it had to be done with a tach. I'd assume they runs like every other saw.

Aftermarket brakes are cheap. I think this one was 21 bucks on the bay. It's nice too.

Just so happens I'm building a 272 now. The top covers are decent and cheap too.14773612696001451404445.jpg

Looks like you could go all the way around with an aftermarket plastic kit for reasonable I'll probably just run mine as it sets but may love it and do somthing like that in the future

How about knowing the hardware you need for the felling dogs anyone have a clue what screws would belong in there. I haven't bothered doing the research to find out about that

Looks like an aftermarket top end, hopefully it is decent, if not a new OEM is ~$150.00

I'd be popping in some new seals and rubber.

Nice score, good luck with it.

The only thing that killed 440 production was emissions. Even after the 441 came out, they started selling 440s again for more than 441s!

good info here. I always wondered about the 'hole' in the cover also.
