I agree Simon, based only on what I see said by others I am skiddish about AM cylinders and so far have only used Meteor pistons in OEM cylinders.

The fellow on AS got back to me about the OEM piston and cylinder for the 242xp. He has a used cylinder that's dirty on the outside but very nice on the inside, a piston he says looks to be almost new with ring, wrist pin, and wrist pin bearing. Also has a base gasket. He said he would sell all for $125 plus shipping. I'm now thinking I should try and see if I can buy that...

I have no prob with Meteor as a maker and use there stuff in preference to any other "Non OEM " maker when im repairing saws. I just want originality on a collectable sort of saw. Bit like a old car with the right engine in it rather than a transplant to another sort of motor.
Thats just me though Joe..this is your build and your pocket :)

The guy we bought those cheap Tecomec guy is this one:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/381926260790

I would only used Meteor piston in 242 if it was the only piston avaible, there is 4 reasons to unvoid them in 242.
1) piston crown is 0.8 mm lower then 242, and it goes the same way for 42.
2) piston ring is also dropped 0.8mm, you may get issues with a ring travel down in intake port, probleby why Meteor has placed ring pin different.
3) its 34.2mm tall, add 0.8mm and we speak about 35mm, 242 has a 34mm tall piston.
4) it isnt ported as 242 piston is.

If you choose a Meteor piston you has to expect to drop the jug.

Personally I like Meteor, but they failed big time with their 242 piston.

there is at least 4 different Mahle OEM jugs, and 3 different Mahle pistons, pluss the Gilardoni 241B with a KS piston.
The real hot rod is the combination they used from 91 up to, well, that I dont know, but before 96. Extreme bewels and lightest piston ;)

I agree Tor, definitely a last option for me but can be doable if it comes to that. I wonder, is it possible to open up the sides of a Meteor to make it so it has the windows??? Seems like it might be doable with an OEM piston as a guide?

yup, I am pretty sure there is enough meat to do it.
Ill dump it in my 242 project and mark where the skirts are placed in ex and in port for you.

The jug I have is a Mahle 42zn13. The seller on AS has a Mahle 2zn13. I don't know if it's a different jug or if he left the "4" off by mistake?

Ok so I just measured the thickness of the base gasket I removed from this saw. It came in at .023" or .58mm in metric. Deleting the base gasket will almost make up for the Meteor piston being .8mm shorter at the crown for squish and exhaust and transfer timing. Hmmmmm

Well boys, I'm happy to report the cylinder salvage was a resounding success! I used muriatic acid, rinsed with soapy water and sanded. Had to repeat the process several times but the cylinder came out wonderfully!! :) :D

Now I'm thinking I'll see if the gentleman on AS would be willing to sell just the OEM piston.

Something has been bothering me about all this ...piston size thing. I just dont remember the big differences in the piston size between the piston i took out of the 242 ( i showed pics of pistons). Iv put the callipers on the Mahle piston that i replaced firstly with a Meteor and then a windowed Golf piston.
Mahle was ....34.10 mm ! ..and as best as i can tell ..14.05 mm top of pin to crown.....Thats a OEM fitted Mahle . That should confuse you all more :D

Yep, thoroughly confused now! Lol!!

Well my last little project for today was to see about opening up the muffler for this little guy a bit. I don't know that a second port is necessary or really feasible given the relative small size of this muffler, so what I did was remove the screen, screen holder, and little fingers coming down from the deflector. It looks like it opens the outlet quite a bit compared to before. IMG_20170507_151731117.jpg IMG_20170507_151738987.jpg

awesome, you did a great job there :)
Working with meteor pictures for ya

Good save on this, if you have to use a tecomec kit they are good quality, just in case someone else is looking for an alternative who is reading, my dealer installed 1 a while ago and it gets used often, no issues
a buddy of me has run with Tecomec for a few months, it is at least as snappy and strong as any of my oem 242's.

Meteor is 13.2 mm top of pin to crown.

Oh, quick question: Is 7-pin the standard size rim for this saw?? I need to get a new rim, the one that is on it is beyond worn out.
7 pin is what my 242's run with, I tryed 8 rim but left it very fast.
