for anyone interested, i'm planning on doing a bolt for bolt assembly vid on the 660 kit. i'm awaiting its arrival, and hope to have it done in a couple weeks....

I have some notes taken from the 660 thread, Walt, and MM now... so hopefully I can address that stuff in the vids

oh, and once I have it together... its off to jason for ...uh... fun :-D
Do you already have something like this for the 372?

For the sake of the town idiot, please tell me what kit this is that is the whole saw. I have no 660 parts to help me. Before I jump onboard I'd like to understand what I'm playing with.

It's a complete copy of a Stihl ms660. Minus a screw or 2, or a piece of foil, mainly a small part or 2 that doesn't get shipped. If you contact the manufacturer, supposedly they're good about getting you the rest of the parts

Can anyone participate in this? This is the first mention of it I've seen.
FWIW
I say use whats in the box.
The builder can substitute circlips, rings, gaskets seals, carb (of same bore). Parts that increase durability, lesson the likelihood of failure, increase tune-ability..., can be substituted.
No part can be substituted that would provide an performance increase in performance over what was originally in the box.
You must use the supplied piston, cylinder, crank.
I would expect the builder to be able to port, cut squish and base.

To keep it so anyone can participate, no removable cylinder heads, stroked cranks and no expansion chamber exhaust. Or, a different class for those who wish to.

For me, It would be fun to see everyone just have to deal with whats in the box.....even things like the carb. They can be made to work well enough for a cookie or three. And just the 54mm that comes with it....then the cost is down, and what you do to it on your time is fine. Here's the thing, for a work saw that has to be lived with, there are several things that need to be upgraded. But to yank and make a few cuts, it really doesn't matter. What is in the box will do that. AND there is a bit of "luck" in the draw.....I would say if there is a bad cylinder, then another 54mm substituted would be OK. I've seen some with bad plating..but its real obvious even before you build with it. AND the ragged ports are going to be touched up with a die grinder anyway, so only the "go/no-go" nature of the plating is to be worried about. Then its about who can make the Box saw first run, and then run better than the other guy. AND by doing that, especially if its a thread, then whats happened is the creativity spills out into cyber space and may inspire more to grab one and tweak it..as they see what can be done...then you know there will be endless follow up threads as folks modify and try other AM parts, and thats what a lot of this is about, a reason to hang out and talk saws...either in reality or cyber space.

I don't think there should be any prize but the notoriety of winning. Street Creed only.

If you're allowing any aftermarket jug, I don't feel you should limit what can be modified on it (except a head). You'll be limiting the ingenuity that may lead us to some new discoveries in power production.

So one builder brazes 6 inconel boost ports on his jug and Randy's grandson wins because he left a lump of JB weld in the intake port accidentally. That's what I wanna know.

It also should emulate a worksaw, so a head saw really isn't really true to form.

My vote is this:

You can replace any part in the saw that may increase reliability, but not performance. This excludes the crankshaft and rod itself.

The coil can be swapped, what if someone gets a dud?

Carb has to be limited to one that is a bolt on to the 066/660.

Perhaps limit the amount of $$$ one can spend on the entire build.

The jug bore must be limited to 56mm. Perhaps limit to a jug that will bolt onto the saw chassis with no modification of the jug base? No removable heads. That would leave us to use any 066 AM jug or a big bore. Any welding or epoxy on these standard jugs is allowed. This would eliminate guys trying to fit an AM 3120 jug onto the saw, but it also would limit different designs being tried, like trying to shoehorn a 395 or 661 jug onto the saw.

That's my vote. It's not cast based upon my own limits, it's more of a KISS deal.

I cant participate as I am on the other side of the world, but I sure would like to.

:(

I was recently handed a Chinese 660 that wouldn't run and after replacing a stripped nut that wasn't holding the carb down tight, it actually ran really well.
I have thought about getting a farmer tech top end and seeing if I can get it to run well by grinding and filling, cutting and sanding.

I will be watching this with interest

I really liked the original concept that Mastermind had. I hope that he stays true to his original concept. Wether we realize it or not, the skills level here has always been a blessing and a curse at the same time. For me hanging around here has seriously upped my game. I don't mind trying to up it some more as that is growth. So if I have a vote, I say whatever gets more people trying something new the better. Besides, I'm not sure that the words Chinese and Hot Saw go together very well. Looking forward to the final decision. SS
