You have a best friend for life , Lol
We grew up next to each other and have stayed close for almost 40yrs now. He’s a great dude and will give the shirt off his back to help someone even when it means putting his needs aside so this is an easy no brainer.

I’ve always wanted to find a couple older McCullochs to tinker with but for now time and money are more limited than I’d like.
Great thing about them is when you have them, they aren't going anywhere. Work on them when you have time, even five minutes here and there just to clean a part or tinker with it to see how it goes together will end up over time getting it done.

You can watch e-bay and look for opportunities to get a Mac 10-10 to start with like this one eBay - Mac 10-10 that lists for parts/not running $50 bid and $21 shipping - $70 (if you win) and you have a saw to work on that looks complete parts wise. You can always put out a request here on the forums for an older project saw and put the price range you are looking for and see what options pop up, guys here have all sorts of stuff squirreled away they would be happy to sell to someone getting into rebuilding/restoring. Check antique stores, sometimes they don't know what they have and you can get a good deal on a "vintage" chainsaw!

I just picked up a Mac 10-10 from a member here that was mostly complete (this I knew ahead of time, he laid out all the known issues) and had a seized piston, I paid $50 including shipping. It is a fun project, relatively simple saw to work on and there are people here on the forum who specialize in Macs and may have extra parts they are willing to sell and plenty of advice if you run into roadblocks.

I just ran across this thread and see you already bought a saw. I am sure it will be great but I will say hands down the best choice would have been a 372 from Bruce. They are a solid saw that has stayed in the line up for decades in one form or another from the 272 to the 371 to the 372.

Maybe the next one can be a 372. I asked what he wanted and the 562 XP checked all his boxes so I figured let er’ rip !!

My comment was not intended to be critical. I just know when all the 395's get retired Husky will not have a good logging saw to replace it. The same with the 372. I am old school, set in my ways, and refuse to change.

I know how to correctly read you Bill and I didn’t take it negatively!! We think the same in a lot of ways that are hard to put into words on the ol’ internet.

Have you ever run a 592 ? , I get the old way or the high way , and the 395 has been the big work horse for years, but unfortunately time stands still for know one and so does the evolution of the chainsaw,

No doubt time passes by whether we like it or not and saws evolve. When you have a proven design though stick with it. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Stihl understood this with the Contra.

Oh I’m definitely in for this conversation. I’ve an 044 and 066 that’d love and porting. Maybe the first ported saw I own will be a Hoosky 😂

Have a 371 torn down now. Bearings cleaned up great…time to reassemble 😀

Randy builds a sweet 395.
I am sure others do also but I am limited in funds to try one from all builders.
