Just think, Stryper had a top 25 hit, and Throw Momma from the Train had just been released. I think I was a freshman in high school.

Exhaust manifolds are first followed by the lower intake manifold. 16 bolts hold the three manifolds to the side of the head. After an interesting torque sequence, the heat shield is installed to keep as much heat off the injectors as possible.

Time to prime the oil system. I fill through the distributor hole so that I can make sure oil gets pumped to the top of the engine. Little zinc additive to help with cam break-in and we'll spin up the pump with a drill and see if we have pressure!

Plenty of oil on top is a good sign!

When I removed the oil pump drive to prime the pump the clip broke and flew into space! So ran to the parts store and was able to locate on later yesterday afternoon. Started it up, set timing and proceed to break in the cam. Smoke was coming from the exhaust the whole 20 minutes at 2000 rpm but thought nothing of it. You know, burning off grease and oil from the exhaust, right? Nope! I rolled #2 injector o ring and it had been spewing gasoline all over the exhaust the whole time!

So, no fire, but had to run back to the parts store for more o rings. Got it back together in time to go to bed. Today when I get home it's road time!

Truck is doing great! Never realized how clattery the old engine was untill you get a fresh tight quiet engine under the hood. Runs super smooth!


Going to be 90 today so definitely have to get the a/c filled back up!
